Ok, I heard that if you travel thru to another country, out of Russia on your way to the US, that you MAY need a transit visa. I didn't really even thing about this before. Does anyone know about this and where I can get information?

Would the airline your flying on know? Should I call / email the Embassy for the "other" country and ask them?

Any help would be appreciated.

She will be going thru Sweden.

This is a great site. Thanks so much for posting it.

Many countries don't require a transit visa as long as the traveler stays within the confines of the airport security area. This is true in Charles DeGaulle in Paris, for instance. I don't know about Sweden. The airlines can tell you.

If you (USC) happen to transit through CDG, try to get a long layover. You can take the bus from the airport for like $8 or something straight to downtown Paris. Another $4 or so and you're on the local buses from the Arc d' Triumph to the Eiffel Tower to Notre Dame. Add $5 and you've got yourself a Royale with cheese and a beer. And I aint talkin no paper cup... I'm talking a real beer.

I got to see Paris for about $20.

Depends on the country/airport. Usually NO if she does not leave the secure area of the airport she will not need a visa and most airports have secure routes to transfer to other gates. Have her speak to the people right after she gets off the plane, they can direct her.

Traveled from JFK to Belarus via Moscow. You DO need a Russian Federation transit visa IF you leave the terminal. Flight to/from JFK was at terminal 2 in Moscow and connecting flight to/from Moscow was terminal 1. Terminals are maybe 6 km apart. Be sure that your transit visa is double entry. Aeroflot provides free bus (every 15 to 20 minutes) between terminals. You do not need a taxi. One drive tried to offer me a "bargain" for 60 Euro.

Moscow Terminal 2 is modern and I found a pleasant 8-hour layover. Terminal 1 is smaller but still a pleasant experience.

Wow! Probably been about 20 years since I've heard ANYbody describe SVO 2 as "modern"

But all of that is becoming irrelevant now as most Aeroflot domestic and international flights, as well as most SkyTeam flights have begun the process of moving to the new Terminal D (SVO 3). In other words, for almost ALL locations within Russia the domestic and international flights will be through the same terminal --- no more bus rides or rip-off taxi rides will be needed.

Delta's flights between Moscow and New York are scheduled to move to the new Terminal effective January 28.

A full schedule for the transfer of flights can be found here:
