My husband is still looking for stable work (not on call)...not necessarily full-time (although it would be nice). I make enough for the basics (rent, food, utilities, bills), but we want to have more than a few dollars extra at the end of each month.

He has been looking almost non-stop for a year and a half. He gets hired seasonal, but nothing pans out. His biggest problems for the jobs for which he is qualified is his age (not being a teenager) and the inablility to speak a second language. The jobs he has gotten in the States (as well as his former job in the UK where he worked for 12 years) have given him glowing references, but that doesn't seem to help. He has gone back to school, but he can reaarange his school hours if necessary.

Is anyone else out there having as much trouble finding stable employment?

you are one very lucky person!:) how did you find the job? what website? I have been applyin online, filling out all those forms for almost two months and no response yet. I wonder if it is because of the holiday season?or because I don't have any experience yet in the states. Geeesh! It's kinda frustrating actually. But hearing something positive like yours, makes me feel good and hope still lol.

I didn't apply for an EAD, so I waited for the approval of my AOS application, which didn't take that long. As soon as I received the physical card, I applied for a job in research and development and was interviewed by the HR on the phone the following day, and I went to be interviewed further by several people in the company within the week of submitting my application. They called me back after the weekend was over and offered me the job. I reported to work a week after that.

My immigrant husband has been looking for over 2 months with no luck yet. I'm the USC with 2 college degrees and can't seem to find a permanent job, despite glowing references and a wide array of skills. The market is tough right now. Hang in there. Consider going back to school, as the economists are predicting job growth will be slow for 2 years.

May as well add my response...

I got the 90-day employment authorization stamp on my I-94 when I entered the US on my K-1 in April 2007, but I didn't actively seek employment until after receiving my EAD and green card (within days of each other) in August 2007. I found a job as a waitress in August/September 2007 (I can't remember now but think I found the job pretty much straight away but put off my start date until September because my mother was coming to visit) and worked every shift I could get, while applying for anything and everything else that paid a steadier wage in the mean time. I lost count of how many positions I applied for, but it was a LOT. I did fire off a huge amount to one particular locally-based big company, and after many automatic rejections, was surprised to get an email inviting me for a pre-interview for a job I'd applied for with them, in December 2007. I was then invited for a real interview, and was quite amazed to be offered the job... started in January 2008, and am still there now.

I do consider myself VERY lucky to have found a job so quickly. Even more so considering that that interview was literally the only one I got out of many, many applications I submitted. The same week I had the interview-turned-job-offer-turned-job, I had an interview at a local temp agency, where the recruiter sounded very positive that she'd be able to find me plenty of openings (this was 2007, mind...) - never did get to find out how that would have gone, as the job offer came up immediately afterwards. Like I said, I was lucky. Very lucky, I think!

Good luck to anyone out there who's job-hunting, or about to be. Applying for and interviewing for jobs are right up there among the things I hate most in the world, and it's difficult right now for everyone, let alone people who've just arrived in the US from other countries...

2005 - We met

2006 - Filed I-129F

2007 - K-1 issued, moved to US, completed AOS (a busy year, immigration-wise)

2009 - Conditions lifted

2010 - Will be naturalising. Buh-bye, USCIS! smile.png

My German husband just started a job this week, ~2 1/2 months after receiving his EAD. It is low wage/skill and a graveyard shift, but it is a job. He has skills in IT, but the economy is rough and there aren't a lot of jobs to be had these days. Hang in there if you're looking, and plan on taking something below your abilities to start. My husband is fortunate that he has some interviews lined up for jobs in his field, and it is coming in handy that he is bilingual. Make sure you are noting that on your resumes, and good luck to everyone who is looking.

Got a part time job within 2 days of getting my EAD, and a full time job a month afterwards.

A lot of people will not try for jobs they feel are beneath them when they first start looking. This is a mistake IMHO. Getting an entry level job for an employer that has a good deal of upward or departmental mobility is the way forward. If you are interested in furthering your education then try to get hired at a University that will give you tuition benefits as part of your benefits package.

I got my EAD in September and started looking for work then in my profession. By the end of October it was obvious that there were no jobs locally in my field so I started applying for alot of jobs including at the local supermarkets and banks and various stores. I never heard anything about these applications I think probably due to my qualifications. I applied for a job with a local police department in November and after 3 long months of their rigorous application process I started my first job yesterday, 7 months exactly after arriving in the states and 4 1/2 months after getting my EAD.
