I'm guessing answers will vary based on the type of job the new immigrant is seeking. My wife interviewed for a job one of her friends told her about almost immediately after she received her EAD. She realized it wasn't her kind of job though and didn't take it.

K1: 01/15/2009 (mailed I-129F) - 06/23/2009 (visa received)

AOS: 08/08/2009 (mailed I-485, I-765, & I-131) - 10/29/2009 (received GC)

3 weeks - I came in on a CR1 so no EAD necessary. Took two weeks "off" to get settled and move into our apartment properly, then started looking and 3 weeks later got hired.

Second time around was 6 weeks due to the hiring process being longer and more drawn out (2 interviews, pre-employment screening before job offer, etc)

I don't believe in working a full time job, that's why I imported a Nurse

For my wife, she got a job about 1 month after she rec'd her EAD.

Been working about 6 months now, Her first job ever, She has had 2 pay raises and can make her schedule each week.

Nursing has worked out well for her

I didn't apply for an EAD, so I waited for the approval of my AOS application, which didn't take that long. As soon as I received the physical card, I applied for a job in research and development and was interviewed by the HR on the phone the following day, and I went to be interviewed further by several people in the company within the week of submitting my application. They called me back after the weekend was over and offered me the job. I reported to work a week after that.

CR-1 - 13 weeks. I think they start searching for people after all the holidays are done in January. The process was prolonged with 2 on the phone interviews and one in-person interview with 3 hiring managers.

It wasn't too hard for my husband either....there was a job lined up and as soon as he had his EAD he was able to start. A few months later he changed jobs and he's been at this one since. It's not in his field, but it is a job that pays relatively well and he's not complaining. :)

Got my EAD in the mail on Sat and started my job Monday thereafter. We were lucky it all worked out that well.

I basically started looking for a job on job boards about 1 month after I got here. I only had to send one application. Then phone interview, in person interview and that was it! Got the job. :)

I work in healthcare.

Have you been applying for jobs? If you have been and you haven't been getting so far as an interview I would be contacting HR for feedback. If your resume isn't getting looked at and passed through to the right hands then you need to make some changes/improvements to make sure it does get through to the right people

But if the problem is that there aren't jobs out there to apply for then you may have to consider looking for something else, or moving

Immediately - my mother-in-law is a preschool teacher, and if there's one advantage to being a teacher it's having a lot of contacts! I was very fortunate not to have to job-hunt.

As soon as I received my GC late sept. 2005 (no temp work permit received,GC approval was speedy) I registered at a temp labor office... they made me do all kind of oddjobs (chasing garbage trucks, digging ditches, riding shotgun on PFG delivery trucks) till I applied for a job as inventory tech/courier at the bloodbank in Feb 2006, where I've been working since... Pays well, benefits etc
