There is a long-lasting bond between the French and American nations going back to Lafayette & Washington.

If it wasn't for the French blockade of the British Navy, Cornwallis would have been resupplied and there would not be a United States of America. That doesn't even include all the French soldiers who fought alongside Washington and other Revolutionary Commanders at various battles including the final victory at Yorktown. Rochambeau, de Barras, de Grasse, Lafayette and many others weren't Colonists and they weren't British. The French forgot????? If they did, they're not the only ones.
