My friends, here I am again, with another problem.... You have helped me with precious advice before, so Im asking for help again. Looks like even though we were lucky to have our NOA2 quickly, it's not gonna be easy to be together :(

Here's the story. We need a co-sponsor and noone in my fiance's family is willing to sign the papers. They are scared about the consequences, being sued or having the government take their assets etc. I understand them. I understand that they do not know me and I guess they cannot trust me... We don't know what to do... I don't think we should force anything. If they don't want to do it.... it's their right to say no....

So my question is: can the co-sponsor be a friend? I know that some countries' embassies do not accept this. Don't know about Romania. I couldn't find any info on this.... Do you think I should call the embassy on monday and just ask them?

I am not sure about Romania; but our co-sponsor was a family friend and it was not an issue at all.

Your fiance might want to explain to the family members what sponsorship entails, it sounds scary, but it is not really :)

Best of luck

Thank you for your answer. Any idea where I can find more details about what being a co-sponsor implies? So far I couldn't find too much info...

In a nutshell, a cosponsor is there to make sure the intending immigrant does not become a public charge. If the immigrant ever claims "means tested benefits", the sponsor and co-sponsor are responsible for paying those moneysss back. I have yet to see that happen on VJ, and i've been here almost 4 years.

Google is your friend :)

Yes, the information is found on the I-134 and its instructions but you'll also want to google "I-134 not binding" for further information. Later, when your fiance adjusts status to permanent resident though, any joint sponsor will be signing a binding contract. So, unless the petitioner is going to get a better job, you'll want to let your additional sponsor look over the I-864 as well.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...
