Your friend cannot invite you and have you apply for a J1 visa.

J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa General Information: The United States government issues J-1 Visas to individuals who take part in a wide range of exchange visitor programs sponsored by schools, businesses, and a variety of organizations and institutions. These programs are envisioned for business and industrial trainees, scholars, students, international visitors, teachers, research assistants, and those on cultural missions. In addition, there are several exchange visitor programs for young people, including summer employment programs, internship programs for university students and au-pair programs.

J-1 Exchange Visitor Eligibility Requirements: Individuals meet the criteria for a J1 Exchange Visitor Visa if they are coming to the United States as a student, scholar, trainee, teacher, professor, research assistant, medical graduate, or international visitor who are participating in a program of studies, training, research, or a cultural enrichment program that is specifically designed for such individuals by the United States Department of State, through its Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa Application Guide is an informative and comprehensive guide to the J-1 Visa and contains everything an individual needs to know in order to successfully apply for this visa.

Your friend may be thinking of a B2 visitor visa. You must apply for the visa yourself at the local US embassy/consulate. No one can apply for a visitor visa for you; you must do it yourself. Since the B2 visa is a visitor visa to enter the US, you cannot get one if you are already in the US. You must show sufficient ties to your country to overcome the presumption that you intend to be an illegal immigrant. There is very little your friend can do aside from sending an invitation letter.

She cannot sponsor you for a visitor visa. No one can sponsor anyone for a visitor visa. You must apply on your own at the US embassy or consulate.

I'm sorry, but I can't not ask - what does "on felony" mean? To the original poster, before you answer, a felony is a serious crime, so could you explain what you mean?

It doesn't matter what felony the OP's friend committed. There is no basis for the friend to help the OP with her or his visitor visa.

I know that, I'm sure that the OP means something else entirely, I'm just curious about what.

What you need is a B2 visitor visa. You only can apply for one at your home country (where you legally live). It is valid for a maximum of 6 months, and in order to get approved, you must show them that you will return to your country, for example by showing that you have a job waiting, or family, or an apartment in your name. Depending on which country you live in, it's more or less difficult to get one.

That's the only visa that would work for you, and no sponsor is required, and no sponsor can help you.

If you would like a visa that would allow you to move to the United States, things are different, but these visas are even more difficult to get. To answer your question: yes, a convicted felon could help you by providing an affidavit of support (showing that she will be financially responsible for you), but that's not really sponsoring.

Many decades ago people could move to the United States if they had a sponsor, but that's ancient history. Now you have to fit in one specific category, and the waiting time is very long.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Only the US embassy or consulate where you apply for a B-2 visitor visa can tell you how long the process will take. Each embassy/consulate has its own workload and some process visas faster than others. My aunt got a visitor visa from the US Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City in about 3 weeks.

A J-1 Visa is issued for an Exchange Visitor who is participating in an established J Exchange program pre-approved by the State Department (formerly pre-approved by USIA). The boss at the grocery store would have to establish an exchange program that is pre-approved by the State Dept. before he/she can even sponsor you for a J-1 visa. Is he/she willing to do this? It will cost money and time to get this pre-approval and there is no guarantee that the program will be approved or you getting a J-1 visa after it is approved.

A B-2 visitor visa is a non-immigration visa that does not allow you to work in the US.

Forget about your friend sponsoring you for anything. There is no basis in the law for her to sponsor you for a B-2 or J-1.

You seem very confuse. Go talk to an immigration lawyer. You are repeating your questions after getting answers.
