Social Security Card -- Invalid?

I will try to get right to the point......My husband has a SS card that reads "Not valid for employment without DHS approval"

He just received his Green Card.

He applied for a job with a national retailer. They did a background/credit check on him. Last week we got a letter from the company who did these checks. Nothing seemed odd except on one of the pages it said "SSN Invalid" -- so, I called. They asked that we fax them his actual SS card and his state ID. Did that.

The company called and offered him a job on Tuesday. Yesterday we received a letter from the "credit check" company saying -- Thanks for your interest but we cannot hire you. The reason had something to do with his SS number -- they said there were "discrepancies." We called the retailer and they said not to pay attention to the letter he has the job and is to come in next week.

I cannot get an answer from the retailer or the credit check company as to what the "discrepancy" is with his SS card/number. Is this something I should be worrying about? Has this happened to anyone? Should we go get to Social Security and get the restrictions taken off? Is is possible to do this? Am I rambling? Don't answer that question. Thank you!!!!!

If you are talking about the SSN Verification Printout, yeah your local office can give you one. Just make sure he says it's needed for employment or there is a chance they might want to charge him for it.

https://s044a90.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100202320

RM 00202.320 Issuing Numidents and SSN Verification Printouts

Under the Privacy Act, an individual has the right to a copy of his/her SSN information, including the Form SS-5 or systems-generated application, and the Numident printout.

2. NH Insists on Obtaining Document For Third Party Verification

A NH may still insist on obtaining an SSN Verification Printout – either because a replacement card request was processed and they do not want to wait for receipt of the replacement card or because they don’t have the necessary evidentiary documentation to obtain a replacement card. In these cases:

Obtain proper identification from the number holder (NH).

Select SSN Verification Printout from the Numident Query Menu and route the verification to the printer.

Stamp the FO address stamp on the SSN Verification and sign the document before providing it to the NH.
