Moving a horse in USA

Hi

I'm wondering if someone knows about moving a horse in USA, could I do it with my K1 visa ?

I mean about customs and taxes...I know he will have to have vaccinations and vet check before and all papers...I am expecting to moving him around 6 or 7 months after my move to Texas...because my daughter will find it hard not having him for summer time in QC...

He is worthing maybe around 3K or 4K maybe less maybe more I didn`t check the horses' market since 3 years!

It should cost me around $2000 just for transport...so I'm wondering how much of other cost I should expect...I love him and I don`t really want to sell him...

Having him with me will be very helpfull for me to adapt to my new life in a new country....

Thanks a million

Jo

You should be fine. He is considered part of your personal property so you can import him the same as you bring down your pets. You need to provide veterinary records (Veterinary Health Certificate from a Government vet) and proof of certain vaccinations and you will need a vet check at the border when he crosses so you will have to co-ordinate your arrival at the border and there are specific POE you must use. There is an inspection fee for this.

Here is a link to the information that you will need: http://www.aphis.usda.gov/import_export/do...rses_canada.pdf

What type of horse do you have? I was a horse crazy girl and had my own Canadian Sport Horse for 28 years. She died well before I moved here otherwise she would have come with me as well.

Thanks Anh Map and Kathryn for your help

I have a paint (but breeding stock) before I have had QH and a Paint mare (mom`s of my baby) and a Warmblood...I can`t imagine to move without him ...it would be less expensive to sell him and buy a horse in TX because it`s cheaper here...but it`s my baby....

I have an other question I won`t be moving him ...I found someone who does horses transport ...he will move him for me...I can trust him (good references) but you think he could use my K1 visa? or I will have to be there with him?

It`s 3 days of transport, 2 drivers...they have to stop to make relax and walk the horses...I was not expecting to be at the boarder at the same time...since I will be in Texas already maybe since 6 months....

What would you suggest?

Thanks again

your help is always precious

Jo

P.S. my baby at 1 year old (now close to be 4 yo)

If you are using a professional transport service they will know the routine at the border. You will need to provide them with a copy of your K-1 Visa and the I-94 that will be stapled in your passport. That is your proof that you are legally allowed to live in the US and are allowed to transport your personal property into the US.

I know what you mean about not selling him. I'm glad you are able to bring him. I had my mare from the day she was born to the day she died. She moved with me from Kingston to Ottawa and back, then to St. Catharines and finally to Chatham. I could no more sell her than I could cut off my head.

3 days - that is still a pretty quick trip so they must be driving non-stop except for the rest breaks.

And wow - what a lovely yearling - beautiful confirmation. He must be gorgeous now he's grown up. I like his colouring too, quite unique.

Yes if you are standing beside him...but if you are sitting on him he will move if you use your legs not the reins...

I would not ride that far...I won`t see me arriving at the boarder sitting on him lol
