LOL, yes, I married a weegie......and I still make him repeat himself every now and then.

Glasgow is an "interesting" city to say the least. I lived there for nearly a year and glad to have had that experience. You've got to have a tough hide to survive there tho'.

Once I applied at an employment agency when I moved back to CT. The interviewer looked at my resume and very seriously said, "Oh, I see you worked in Scotland. You must speak the language." OMG, I had such a hard time keeping a straight face! She had absolutely NO idea.

I seriously cannot understand why some people seem unable to understand a Scottish accent. I love how my husband sounds. I've told him if we ever have an argument all he has to do is say "bridge" lol

Oh, don't get me wrong. I LOVE my husband's accent as well. In fact, when we first met, I told him I only wanted him for his accent. He said, "that's okay as long as you want me!"

Just watched Gerard Butler in a couple of movies and wonder why they just don't let him speak with is native accent!?! Such a waste.

They never let him use it. I tried to explain to David that women here find Gerard Butler very attractive but he says Why? he is ugly. Men. lol He uses a lousy attempt at Irish in PS I love you and American in the Ugly Truth. I've got no idea what that was in the 300. I tried to watch Rockn Rolla and fell asleep. James McAvoy is another Scot who never gets to use his own accent in films. There is a guy on Lost and one on Son's of Anarchy who do tho. The guy on Son's is from Glasgow and has horrible scars on his face from getting jumped outside a pub there. I do notice a funny thing. When we go places in Scotland we rarely run into anyone Scottish. It seems like all the people working in castles, tourist shops, restaurants and pubs are either Irish, English or Polish. We spent a while exploring the Highlands and Skye and I think the only authentic accent I heard was the Seal boat tour operator and an older lady at a pub. I do have one complaint. I wish he would not change how he speaks when he speaks to me. My husband slows his speech and uses completely different words when he talks to me than he does with his family and it drives me crazy. No one else dumbs it down for me. His dad and his sis talk to me same as to anyone else. I think his mum is more careful with me too. It makes me feel like they all think I am stupid or something. His dad even said something about it at the wedding. I sure hope he doesnt lose his accent living here!

Don't think of it as "dumbing down" for you. They are just being considerate. My husband had been living on the Isle of Man for 15 years when we met and his Glaswegian accent was milder than it is now that he's moved back there. Even so, he did slow it down for me for quite a while because he knew I might have trouble. This surprised me because I grew up with grandparents who moved here from Hamilton, so I felt it would be a snap for me. Well no way. My family had been here so long that theirs was quite "Americanized." Anyway, although I have learned a lot of their terms, every now and then he will throw a new one in. I tell him, "stick with the ones you've already taught me!" LOL I haven't had problems understanding his sisters and brothers-in-law, but his parents who are originally from Ireland are another story. Wow, his dad was hard work, unless we were on the phone. For some reason, I had less difficulty with him then.

If you want to hear authentic Scottish accents, visit a secondary school there. I worked in one in Glasgow and that was quite an experience! One of the "bad" boys in the class said, "Geeze a pen the noo, Miss." Although I knew exactly what he was asking, I pretended I didn't just to bust his chops. That Glaswegian patter is really fascinating to listen to.

I know that fellow you mentioned in Lost, can't think of his name, but he's great. I've told Frank's single male friends who complained about meeting women that all they need to do is come to the USA and talk! It's sexier than any other accent I've heard.

Sorry if I'm rambling. Been out shopping all day!

I actually enjoy seeing how far off topic we can get.lol

David teaches me words but would die laughing if I tried to use them. I love that there are so many insults and I could use them and no one would know. The first words he taught me were mince and lorry. Every now and then he uses a common word that I dont know or which has a completely different meaning here and he will say What's a window? and laugh before explaining. It's become a runnig joke. He also made me learn Och aye the noo Jimmy and there is a moose loose in the hoose. lol I got a laugh out of his family talking about the heilan coos we saw.

I kinda worry he'll have lot's of pretty girls flirting once they hear him speak!

Topic? Oh, I completely forgot about the topic, lol.

Speaking of "mooses".......we went to a pub quiz one night in Glasgow. The question was "What mammal has the greatest population in North America?" One of the quiz guys whispered the answer to me (they felt sorry for us because we were just a team of two)...."Moose." So, I wrote in "MOOSE" and later found out that the answer was MOUSE!!! Fortunately they realized my ignorance and gave us the point. Of course, I really didn't think there were THAT many MOOSE in North America - but that does include Canada - so.........
