When people told you they changed their name at the social security office, I think they meant they informed that office of their name change

that was effected by the marriage. The social security office doesn't have the power to change your name legally I think, but they will accept

a name change that you tell them to make if it's been officially achieved on the marriage certificate.

[Not 100% sure about this, so confirmation anyone?]

is the I-94 also good for 90 days?

I am still waiting for my SSN card but was told it will be in the mail in a few days, so I will change mg name asap once I get that, but will it really be affected iwhen the I-94 expires? How do you know the I-94 expires? is it based off on the POE?

if and when the I-94 expires can I use a military ID insteaD?

If you just want to complicate your life, go ahead. I suggest waitng until you have your green card to change your name. The name on the card, in fact the card itself, makes no difference whatsoever. There is no rush to change it.

as soon as I get my travel document and my husband's travel orders for me to go to japan, I will leave the country so if and when I am scheduled an interview I will come back but we planned on just waiting for the GC to be forwarded to us in his APO mailbox so I won't have a chance to do a name change when I already have it so I thought I might as well do that while I am still waiting for my AP and his orders for me. I have been told though in my previous thread that it won't take that long to have the name chaNGE.

If having my SSN name change was the legal way to start using my married name, I planned to just do that as soon as I can since I am still waiting for my paperwork. It does sound good anyway right? I mean I just won't have the time to do the name change after I get the GC since I'd be overseas in his stationed address. ANy more suggestions? :)

I am not sure of how the APO forwarding works, but just make sure that the APO address is the one that USCIS has for you. The post office doesn't / can't forward the GC, it gets returned to the issuing office.

If you took your husband's name when you got married then the married name is your legal name and you ought to have used that name when applying for AOS. No need to go through all the added steps for changes. You've got the marriage certificate. Use that along with your passport to prove the new name.

well it will get to my parents in law's house and then they will send it to the APO add :) so far nothing has gotten lost thru the mail anyway :)

we actually did write my husband's name as my last name in all the AOS forms, and my middle name is my maiden name ( my last name before we got married, coz that's how it is in the philippines)

our marriage certificate has my name in my maiden name though, i don't know how that happened but it has my maiden name and not my new married name.
