for a K-1 entrant the I-94 expires at 90 days after entry... it should indicate that right on the form

SSN's are issued for life.

use your military ID for what?

If you just want to complicate your life, go ahead. I suggest waitng until you have your green card to change your name. The name on the card, in fact the card itself, makes no difference whatsoever. There is no rush to change it.

oh thank you then.. well i thought an expired I-94 would affect a name change at the SSA..

and i thought changing the name in the SSN would help me do the legal way for a name change from my maiden to the married one..

well, I thought to maybe if they wouldn't acknowledge the expired I-94 the mil. ID would do, i guess it won't help, right? lol

I am trying to figure our ways for my name change, and the SSN was I guess one of them as I had been told on here.

So, since it doesn't matter, I guess I won't need to do a name change from them then?

I mean I already have that one number issued to me right, so what do you think, should I still go to their office and do the name change when I get the card?

I have my miliary ID issued in my married name though

as soon as I get my travel document and my husband's travel orders for me to go to japan, I will leave the country so if and when I am scheduled an interview I will come back but we planned on just waiting for the GC to be forwarded to us in his APO mailbox so I won't have a chance to do a name change when I already have it so I thought I might as well do that while I am still waiting for my AP and his orders for me. I have been told though in my previous thread that it won't take that long to have the name chaNGE.

If having my SSN name change was the legal way to start using my married name, I planned to just do that as soon as I can since I am still waiting for my paperwork. It does sound good anyway right? I mean I just won't have the time to do the name change after I get the GC since I'd be overseas in his stationed address. ANy more suggestions?:)

Then do a name change three years from now...or ten years. whatever. The SS card has nothing to do with what name you use, that is done with the I-485 and then changed with SS. The name on your SS card is really not important. The number is important. The card is the most useless document you will ever receive. I lost mine in 1973 and haven't needed it since.

You can try to change it with the EAD and marriage license, why not? It just isn't something to plan your life around, not very important. You can begin using your married name as soon as the minister says "I now pronouce you man and wife" SS has nothing to say about it.

The SSA will do nothing unless you can provide proof of current work authorization... If you I-94 is expired (or even within two weeks of expiration) and you do not yet have EAD or GC... do not bother going to SSA, they cannot help you until you do.

YMMV

well i've talked to people from the church, those that had just gotten married within the past year said they just went to the SSA office for the name change

they said the marriage license given by the county court house and the marriage certificate signed by the minister was about it..nothing comes in the mail.

So that was what got us concerned about the name change. But someone told me here though that since I have my military ID that could also do because it is a form of identification at the same time I just wanted to make sure because I just dont want to be using a new name when I needed to do something legal for it first

well i called the SSA office the other day and they said it should be in the mail in a few days. But my husband just informed me he had asked them regarding the upcoming marriage, when we first filed about it. He said the lady told him to bring the copy pf the marriage license/certificate after I get the card;

My POE was october 18, 2009 so my I-91 must expire 90 after that so i guess I'm not worried about it's expiry :)

1. name change - if we are talking about a K1... it is BEST to file the I-485 under the name you intend to use when married. If you do that, the initial NOA following your I-485 filing will reflect your new married name! When you get the green card you can adjust the SS card.

2. I-94 expiry ONLY matters if you fail to marry and file the I-485. Once you do that the I-94 expiration is no longer of consequence. You are then are a guest of the US until you receive your green card (or denial of same) unless you filed for Advanced Parole (AP) which allows you to leave and reenter the US while the I-485 is being processed.

Best of luck.

as soon as I get my travel document and my husband's travel orders for me to go to japan, I will leave the country so if and when I am scheduled an interview I will come back but we planned on just waiting for the GC to be forwarded to us in his APO mailbox so I won't have a chance to do a name change when I already have it so I thought I might as well do that while I am still waiting for my AP and his orders for me. I am not sure of how the APO forwarding works, but just make sure that the APO address is the one that USCIS has for you. The post office doesn't / can't forward the GC, it gets returned to the issuing office.

If you took your husband's name when you got married then the married name is your legal name and you ought to have used that name when applying for AOS. No need to go through all the added steps for changes. You've got the marriage certificate. Use that along with your passport to prove the new name.
