I believe Charter Cable is in LA. as well, although I've heard nothing but nightmarish stories about them.

With cable providers you are usually limited to who provides service to your neighbourhood. The only real competition that might be available in the are would be DSL.

A few communities (Where cable/telco companies haven't been able to ban it) in the US are lucky to have some sort of city supported internet option often at speeds much greater than any equivalent commercial option.

Where I live, there is technically competition. But this is an aberation, not the norm. I live right on the boundary of two cable providers. I've called both and they both have said that they can provide service. Both also lay claim to the street as the boundary of their territory. I don't know, I just went with the best deal.
