Lebanon Travel Warning

My job IRL includes providing administrative support to people who travel frequently. To serve them better, a few years ago I signed up to receive travel updates via e-mail from the US State Department.

This Lebanon Travel Warning was in my Inbox today. It's notable for what it DOESN'T mention. Information about the "hostilities" does not include attacks by the IDF. But, travellers are cautioned that HizbAllah and "other extremist groups" are active in the south.

I guess we are expected to read between the lines. . .

Lebanon Travel Warning

July 27, 2006

This Travel Warning is being updated in light of the current situation in Lebanon. Due to ongoing security concerns in Lebanon, on July 27, the U.S. Embassy has been granted ordered departure status. Family members and non-emergency American employees have been ordered to depart Lebanon.

Essential personnel will remain at the Embassy to facilitate vital political, humanitarian, and consular duties. The Department of State urges American citizens to avoid travel to Lebanon and Americans currently in Lebanon to leave. This supersedes the Travel Warning issued on July 19, 2006.

The Department of State is concerned for the personal safety of American citizens due to the hostilities in Lebanon. In light of the recent events in Lebanon and the resulting escalation in violence, including the closure of Beirut International Airport and the Port of Beirut, family members and non-emergency American employees of the U.S. Embassy in Beirut have been ordered to depart Lebanon. The Department of State urges private American citizens to leave Lebanon as well. The U.S. Embassy is monitoring the situation in Lebanon closely and is assisting American citizens to depart safely.

U.S. citizens who are in Lebanon despite this Travel Warning should exercise heightened caution when traveling in parts of the southern suburbs of Beirut, portions of the Bekaa Valley and areas south of the Litani River in South Lebanon. Hizballah maintains a strong presence in many of these areas, and there is the potential for action by other extremist groups in Tripoli. Dangers posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance throughout south Lebanon are significant and also exist in other areas where civil war fighting was intense. Travelers should be aware of posted landmine warnings and strictly avoid all areas where landmines and unexploded ordnance may be present.

The Embassy is located in Awkar, near Antelias, Beirut, Lebanon. Public access hours for American citizens are Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. However, American citizens who require emergency services outside of these hours may contact the Embassy by telephone at any time. The telephone numbers are (961-4) 542-600, 543-600, and fax 544-209. American citizens may register with the Embassy online by visiting <https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs> .

Information on consular services and registration can also be found at <http://lebanon.usembassy.gov/> or by phone at the above telephone numbers between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday local time. Updated information on travel and security in Lebanon may be obtained from the Department of State by calling 1-888-407-4747 within the United States or, from overseas, 1-202-501-4444.

Additional details can be found in the Department of State's Consular Information Sheet for Lebanon, the Worldwide Caution Public Announcement, the Middle East and North Africa Public Announcement and the Travel Publication "A Safe Trip Abroad," all of which

are available on the Department's Internet site at <http://travel.state.gov/>.

The following comment is just my cynicism so feel free to walk around it... but aren't the purdy bombs and bullets coming from BOTH sides??? (or are the ones from Israel intelligent enough bombs and bullets to dodge Americanos?) I do realize they are concerned for aggression caused by US support, but still...

I know I know... stop being so grumpy Jean.

Well, only one side is illegally occupying other people's land. Under the Geneva Convention, occupied peoples have the right to resist.

Perhaps a breakdown of exactly what happened would help you put the conflict into context. Just today I posted a few articles regarding the current Israel/Lebanon on Off-Topic (but I realize that's not exactly your favorite forum :P )

Interestingly enough, the latest "peace plan" from the U.S. (as proposed by Condaleezza Rice) involves Israel removing its army and settlers from the occupied Lebanese territory known as Shebaa Farms, returning the land to Lebanese control, and doing a prisoner exchange with Hezbollah -- trading the captured Israeli soldiers in return for the hundreds of Lebanese prisoners held by Israel.

(By the way, most of these Lebanese prisoners were kidnapped by Israel for this exact purpose -- use as trading cards.)

What should make everyone's head spin is that these very conditions were precisely the demands of Hezbollah from the get-go. But how many more people have to die before the Israeli government is sated with enough blood to sit down at the negotiating table ?

The first time Ms Condi was negotiating, she the offer was excaptable, but not in the order that she was suggesting. She wanted a cease fire from the lebanese side and while isreal still bombed and wanted the return of prisoners while israel bombs. Hesballah stated. Cease Fire first then exchange of prisnors, then we will talk Diplomacy. The end result is the same except for more destruction toward Lebanon. The hilarious thing is in the End is that what will be negotiated would have been the same without the Attack.

The only Difference would be the Death of Civilians and destruction. The Heartache of the people and the Anger. There plan completely Backfired because people who did not support Hesballah before are behing them now. People who where not really with them or against them are with them now. Everyone is angry and you don't want an angry Arab...LOL...Hezballah in the end will be stronger then ever.

Then is always the end of war. Nobody ever wins. Showing who has bigger Biscepts. Who Suffers, the children who's innocence was taken away and whos life has been taken away.

I was born in the middle of a war in Lebanon and we fled when I was a child to the US. My parents had to leave there home to keep us safe. Leave there family behind. What is the end result. When are people going to realize that it's enough. We want to live. But in the end it's human nature to always be at war isn't it. Sad as it is. I am tired, Angry and sad at this whole world and man kind.

Funny people (if?) muslims are. When they wage war - Its Jihad Jihad, Holy war, infidels, Kuyfars (what a funny word). It is their cultural heritage. Dont dare to question.

When they get what they were asking for after provokations - Then immideatly they hide befind dead children (often killed by them for pictures - muslims are notorious for that). and so on. What kind of cowards they are???..

Got some more visuals right here.

You ve got some visuals???and what??? So if it was vice versa then it would be cool. Jihad Jihad??/. Hehehe.

What else you ve got?

Hesballah stated. Cease Fire first then exchange of prisnors, then we will talk Diplomacy.

Talk diplomacy to terrorists??? Are you on coke??? Exchange of prisoners didnt work out before - If you know the history. And what kind of talks after abductions.???

There plan completely Backfired because people who did not support Hesballah before are behing them now.

Well Are they idiots???.. They let some group of people provoke a neighbor. Resdult of this provocation was easily predictable. They are paying with thier lives for that. And they support them \even more. Heh Whats wrong with you there???..

The hilarious thing is in the End is that what will be negotiated would have been the same without the Attack.

Lets not forget who abducted soldiers first. Instead of "talking diplomacy".

I was born in the middle of a war in Lebanon and we fled when I was a child to the US.

Stop bitching and enjoy that. You see a war actually helped you. And no stories about families back there - heard a lot.

One more time. I am not trying to show you my point of view. Well that s downright impossible. I was just wondering US is so bad, halps Israel. But youstill trying to live here, endure suck h a long separation from "loved" ones, "discrimination", "humiliation", and other "stuff". Well why not go back tyo mustafa in Tunisia nad live happily ever since. Among muslims, No kukufars no nothing.???. No "Ms. Condi" (here show some respect to the official of the country that saved your ####### during war, "..???
