Hi,

Since i wont be getting my EAD for another 2 months i have started just browsing some of the major jobsites like moster and dice to name but a few.

I have seen that alot of the jobs that i am interested in require you to be a US citizen or a greencard holder. What about someone who has an EAD? The job roles i was looking at are helpdesk specialist, Technical suport, Desktop support etc. When i start looking will this discriminate against me as i will only have my EAD and the greencard wont be coming for a few months thanx to the screwups of the post office. There are really some exciting positions in boston right now that i would love to apply for but i cannot yet. Also i dont have any references here. The only recent references i have work for HP in dublin, Ireland. Will that matter?

I have my biometrics for my EAD on monday and have also arranged an infopass 15 minutes before my biometrics in order to find out what can be done regarding my rfe as its approaching 30 days since they supposedly sent it out. I have lost faith with the uscis customer service desk as they dont give a ###### whether i am george bush or mickey mouse.

I-751 - Removal of conditions

10-20-2008 - Sent package via usps - overnite mail

10-22-2008 - Package received and signed.

10-28-2008 - Cheque cashed

12-02-2008 - Biometrics in Boston

10-03-2009 - Transferred to CSV

10-04-2009 - 10 year GC on the way

I am a USC but I have never been required by any employer to be a USC or LPR for the jobs I've worked. Those requirements tend to be for positions that require clearances. Most jobs don't. Are you sure you're not misinterpreting?

I would apply for the jobs anyway and deal with the 'employment authorization' issue when it arises. Or, perhaps explain such in a cover letter (if they request a cover letter). There is no reason they should require you to be a citizen, unless possibly its government work (or some other stipulation in that particular field). You are work authorized, and that is all that should be necessary.

I would most definitely list your experience with HP in Dublin. Not having experience at all in IT is one thing, but simply not having US IT experience is a different kettle of fish (and shouldn't be held against you).

Good luck!!

Here in Boston there are many many jobs that say you have to be a LPR or USC and without any US refrences you will find it hard to get even an interview.... If you are going to include a cover letter with a job aplication the dont say anything about your work status... leave the explaining about that until you have an interview and they ask.... or they offer you a job and you then have to tell them.... but hopefully by then you will have sold yourself to them and they will want you as soon as you are allowed to work...

if all else fails get intouch with a temp agency to get you in the door and get you some US refrences....

Good Luck

Kezzie

They probably just put that because they don't want to sponsor anyone on an H1 visa and they get a lot of applicants from people outside the country. (Speaking from someone who's been on the hiring end a few times.... H1 visas can be REALLY time consuming. At my last job we ended up losing a potential employee because the H1 visa took so long.)

Another area you might want to try is Waltham, Mass. There are a lot of high-tech companies out there.

I would say that all you can do is apply. I specifically wrote on my resume "I am authorised to work in the USA".

I think we may have had this conversation before but I forget, what exactly do you do in IT? I know my father just helped a K1 from South Africa get an IT job in Cambridge and it was fine(and there is no way he has citizenship yet), but then again he had my dad vouching for him...

My dad's been in IT in this area since I was a baby, knows a lot of contacts, tell me specifically what sort of job and I can ask him for any tips he may have

Having been in a similar situation a while back I cannot reccommend getting in touch with a good recruitment / staffing agency highly enough.

I approached several agencies but had the most success and the best experience (They found me the job I've now been in for 6 months) with TEKsystems. This link will take you to the page on their website with all their locations in and around Botson.

I contacted them by sending my resume and a cover letter to one of their recruiters. I actually used the contact details of one of their recruiters that was listed against another job on Monster.com, even though I didn't have the qualifications for that particular job. Within 2 weeks I'd met him in person and been put forward for a tech support job.

If TEKsystems have any jobs that you like the sound of I would reccommend them highly. They were very pro-active and the recruiter seemed well versed in the intricacies of the EAD process etc..

Hope thats helped some.

Mark :)

I was checking out jobs in IT in the Boston area before moving to the US from Ireland (since my wife is from that area) and from what I could see most employers simply wanted you to have employment authorization, it matters little if it was an EAD, Green card or US Citizenship.

They just didn't want the hassle of getting you employment authorization because of the time and costs involved. Because you have that authorization already, they'll be all good with that so I'd say apply for everything that looks interesting and deffo include the HP reference/experience on your resume/CV.

Best of luck with it!!

Well I am currently waiting on the edge of my seat for my NOA2 and I have been trying to sus out the IT markey as well. I would love to have something lined up before I arrive in America as my fiance is at university and I will be the one working when I move over, we are saving up money now so that we can surive when I am not working, so if I could get something lined up before getting there it would take the strain off.

I am an IT security consultant in the UK and currently have some options available, but if anyone knows of any contacts in the Kansas City area I would greatly appreciate it.

Someone told me of this qualification do go for so I am studying for that as it is recognised in America.

Try State Street Financial. My husband worked for them in the UK, IT work, they are based in Boston. Great company to work for. I personally know they don't give a toss if you only have an EAD and not a green card.

If you are interested in more info, PM me and I'll give you a few names of who to speak too.

Good luck! :)
