Hi All,

I was just reading some posts about social security numbers and I realized that I have been totally clueless about all this.

My wife (then my fiance) and her minor daughter came here on K1 and K2 visas 8 months ago. My then fiance and I got married and had a baby just after they arrived, and thus had been very busy since. We just sent in AOS package (if I'm not mistaken just short of them being here out of status). On the AOS papers I filled in "NONE" wherever it asked for Social Security number. I thought (again, I've been clueless) that they didn't even get SS numbers until we passed AOS. My wife isn't working now, so it hasn't been a problem yet, but can we get a SS number? Should we get SS numbers? Will this affect AOS? Anything else I should know?

Thanks!

K

I have no knowledge of the SSN for the child, but your wife won't be able to apply for it, now, until she has received her EAD or greencard. The window for applying for it prior to the AOS was within 76 days of POE.

Moving this thread to from the AOS to the SSN section.

you've already filed AOS, so having one or not having one will NOT affect what's going on CURRENTLY with her AOS package.

For now, going forward, she can't apply for a SSN unless she has in hand, either a ) EAD or b ) Green Card.

I would suggest always to get a SSN from the 16 to 74 day window , past POE date, is useful for adding spouse to checking accounts, getting debit cards, etc etc...

Some states require a SSN before issuing state id, as well..

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Should have applied for the K-1 fiancé/wife before her K-1 status expired. The K-2 child needed a Form I-766 or I-551 from day one to be assigned an SSN. You did the right thing by entering NONE on the AOS forms.

With tax time coming up you might need to apply to the IRS for ITIN for both of them. As soon as either has a Form I-766 or I-551 go apply for an SSN.
