Yeah it's a 'virtual' pet. In the world of warcraft (game) as Mal was saying, there are many many pets, this is one of the few you can actually buy with money, as opposed to ones that you can earn or buy ingame - with ingame gold.

So you can summon them while you are in the game and they follow you around looking cute and with the one Mal got he does all kinds of cute things, nice gift :)
