Australia Voted Worst Place to Live

11/15/2009 3:48 PM

GHN News

Melbourne - Australia has been designated the worst place to live in the world, compared with nine other major countries, despite the fact that Aussies earn by far the highest wages.

Life in sun-soaked California or in France, where people retire earlier and live longer, was judged to be the best by researchers at uSwitch.com in the latest Quality of Life index.

Earning $56,410 a year on average, Aussies are $15,790 richer than their European neighbors, but that doesn't translate into an easier life and they are getting a "raw deal" researchers concluded.

Shoppers in Australia pay higher prices for fuel, food, alcohol and cigarettes and receive poorer healthcare and education, the survey found.

"There is more to good living than money and this report shows why so many Aussies are giving up on Australia and heading to France and the USA," said Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at uSwitch.com.

"We have lost all sense of balance between wealth and well-being," she said.

Aussie workers toil three years longer and die two years younger than their French counterparts.

Americans enjoy 2,665 hours of happiness a year, compared with just 1,397 in Australia and they pay five percent less taxes than their happiness-deprived Australian cousins.

The 10 major countries surveyed were ranked in the following order from best to worst quality of life: USA, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Italy, Sweden, Ireland and Australia

Fascinating. Why they'd come to the US is obvious (this country is awesome and clearly far superior to the hellhole down under), but why France?

The what news?

Melbourne - Australia has been designated the worst place to live in the world, compared with nine other major countries, despite the fact that Aussies earn by far the highest wages.

AUS: ranked 2nd

US: ranked 13th

Life in sun-soaked California or in France, where people retire earlier and live longer, was judged to be the best by researchers at uSwitch.com in the latest Quality of Life index.

Uswitch is a site related to debt. But anyways, do they realize that Australia is a desert continent, aka ample sun. Hence the highest rate of skin cancers in the world.

Earning $56,410 a year on average, Aussies are $15,790 richer than their European neighbors, but that doesn't translate into an easier life and they are getting a "raw deal" researchers concluded.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Would you live in Britain? What is your pick for the best or worst place to live in? Give us your feedback.
