My finacee told me that her mother has to go with her to obtain a copy of her birth certificate. That sounds unreaslistic to me. Does anyone know if it is true or if she has wrong information?

It shouldn't be too difficult for mom to lend a hand.

After all, she did a great job the first time around.

Thai bureaucracy isn't the same as that in the US and if she says that is necessary, that is necessary.

We farangs sometimes only think of what WE think is normal.

I get reminded of that from time to time...but I always accept her reasoning

regarding Thai bureauracy, customs, etc..

Suppose it's possible. Rin got her children's herself without them present (makes sense that a parent can obtain the BC of a child). For Rin's BC, her aunt went to get hers in Sisaket (Rin was in Bangkok). Couldn't get it. The amphur told her aunt a male family member of the same last name had to come get it (#######?). Her uncle went and got it without a problem the next day and mailed it to her. Don't ever try to figure out Thai government rules....

This is dependent on the persons age. If they are under 18 they need a parent.

I had thought that maybe someone at the office responsible for issuing cipies of the BC was giving her a hard time, but from your responses this seems to be standard procedure. Thanks.

I seem to recall hearing that if a birth was never recorded, then it required a parent to go with their child to register the birth along with the child. Absent of a parent, a family member could do it.

A home birth is supposed to be recorded within one month of birth in Thailand. In Rin's case, her birthday on her BC is in April, but her mom told her that it had to be earlier, since her father had been away working harvesting rice so it had been registered a few months late. So in all likelihood it was Jan/Feb timeframe (rice harvest period?), but her mom did not want to be outside the one month frame so they registered it April. Rin doesn't believe her mom on this (since she has spent 30 years thinking her birthday was April 24th), but who knows for sure!

Wait til you have to get her single certificate if she has never been married. They required two family members go with her to get it. We went to get another copy of her BC at the Amphur and they basically pulled out a book and started flipping through pages of certificates. In the end they never found hers so we didn't get an extra copy.

They have some strange bureaucratic procedures.

In the US it's either in the government records or not; if not,

and if not a parent probably doesn't have to be present.

Virtually all US births are recorded (even for kids of illegals I believe) because we thrive on paperwork.

The OP knows now how different Thailand is.

Hopefully the OP is thinking ahead and going to get all of these certificates from the Amphur at the same time. That's what Tea did. She didn't take an older family member, but she did have to take her household registration book. She also had to track down a village elder to get them to sign off on all the paperwork, which took a few hours.
