the fiancee had her first name changed. we have the translated certificate but was wondering about her Passport. after reading this below. Does she Have To get her passport name changed.

what gets me is she changed her name from one Thai name to another Thai name..lol . you think it would be for a western name

anyway does she need to get passport amendend ? or is it optional

PASSPORT: The passport must be valid for travel to the United States and have at least six

(6) months of validity beyond the visa issuance date. An immigrant visa is issued in the same

name which appears on the applicant’s passport. If you have changed your name due to

marriage and would like the visa to reflect the change, your passport must first be amended to

include the new name but it is not required that you change your name. Your passport must

also show your correct date and place of birth as indicated on your civil documents. Any

discrepancies should be corrected by the relevant authorities prior to your interview.

The above quote is yours from packet3 instructions.

99.9% of the time the name change is because of marriage, but for whatever reason the passport must be amended

if a name change occurs.

DOS Passport name change

I would suspect the same rules apply to foreign passports, because the DOS has a quirky penchant

for making all citizens, resident aliens and applicants for visas have the same name on all documentation.

My friend had to change the English transliteration of his Cryllic-spelled name into the Ukrainian version

when the USSR broke up; the Russian-spelled name had a different English transliteration so it was no longer the

valid spelling of his name. He had to change all visa documentation (he's on a G-4) as well as his name in all

his work-related documents (payroll, etc.) as a result of becoming a new Ukrainian citizen with a new Ukrainian passport.

I believe the reverse is true (if your name has officially changed, then you have to change your passport

whether it's a US one or not), but the rule of thumb is that all documents have to show the same name.

The name change statement in the quote above is for changes of name AFTER the POE (entry on

US soil). In her case, she changed her name BEFORE the visa and BEFORE the POE, so I think the

DOS would give a problem at the interview stage, and not even let her get on the plane until

she had a new passport. That is, unless they say they explicitly allow her to do that, or give her

X number of days/months to correct the passport.

Before I throw you into a flurry of activity on my word alone, it's best to check with

the Department of State/Consulate because it should be a fairly easy question for them.

I wouldn't go on the word of anyone on this question with the exception of Gary (Gary & Alla) who is

in contact with the USCIS director.

If you're already at the packet3 stage, please fill in your timeline. I understand you're a new member, welcome to VJ.

If you forget some of the dates for the timeline, put in approximations in all fields except for the RFE ones (if you had no RFEs) as this helps your VJ friends understand your case better.
