What do they teach about Canada in America Schools?

I know when I went through School we did learn about the United States in History and Geography and Modern World Problems. We learned how many states, each of there names, the US flag and what the stars and stripes mean. The US involved in wars and conflicts. Past Presidents and what they did for the country. We even learned the climates of various states. I found they taught a little bit of the world in general, but we seem to learn the most about Canada and the next door neighbors, The United States. I think I need to write a letter to Tourism Nova Scotia, they need to be paying me for promoting the Province!

Its a bit of a culture shock to come here to Wisconsin. I am finding some people are very nice, others not so much. I am so use to a place where everyone talks to you. If you meet someone new back home you invite them over for dinner,...give'em a beer and put your feet up. I've been here three months now and haven't made one friend. It will come my sweetie keeps telling me.

Of all the places in Canada that I have been to, Nova Scotia is by far my favorite. I don't think that there is anywhere you could move to where you would find people as friendly as there. I spent alot of time in Antigonish and I'm hoping to take my wife on a trip to the East Coast next summer. I can't remember what town it was in but, there was an old converted church that served a lobster dinner (this is some 15 years ago). It was amazing.

I spent alot a time as a kid in the Antigonish area as I grew up in Cape Breton, about 1/2 hr away. It was the big family outing to go the Antigonish to the 5 cent to $1 Store, quite sure the inventory for those prices isn't what it use to be. If you do make it to Nova Scotia I would suggest you try the beautiful Cabot Trail on Cape Breton. The scenery in absolutely breathtaking. Tip for you, go counter clockwise around the trail. It seems when you go clockwise around you spend your whole time looking backwards. The last 6 years in Nova Scotia I spent in the Annapolis Valley and if your wanting to take her for lobster I think you would really enjoy Halls Harbour. They have a lobster pound/restaurant there. Wonderful food. I took my honey there his first visit and everytime he came to visit me he wanted to go back there. We would sit on the rocks and watch the tide. So peaceful and relaxing. Its a perfect postcard picture.

I once stopped in at a little convenience store there. The guy behind the counter was about as old as Moses; he owned the store. It was about 10 am and we started talking. I didn't leave until nearly 4....and that was after he treated me to lunch.

Have you visited Copper Falls up in Northern Wisconsin? It is a great State Park...especially if you lie doing scenery photography.

Haven't been but I will ask my honey about taking me.

As for the comments about your license plates...ever considered it may simply be you're living in Wisconsin?

At first I minded some of the comments, now...hilarious..I should write a book! I'm getting to meet a few people anyways.

What is this Canada you speak of? Honestly I don't think I had any class that mentioned Canada when I was growing up. I think there might have been some mention of the healthcare system at some point and in my French classes we of course discussed Quebec...but that's not really part of Canada right???? :D

the other day, my husband told a co-worker that his wife is English, and someone responded with "oh really, where is she from?"

My husband's uncle (in Tennessee) asked if we celebrated Christmas and New Years the same time as them! That cracked me up! I actually looked at him like he was kidding, until I realized he wasn't. ;)

But heck, you can turn on the TV and listen to the former VP ####### Cheney's daughter tell Larry King that Canadians are not able to choose their own doctor - that the government decides who our doctor will be!

Too funny, some of my honey's family asked me if we celebrated Thanksgiving and Christmas in Canada too...I laughed till I realized they weren't joking.

Yes, listening to them talk about the healthcare debate was downright hilarious, there was one program on that the news reporters were out interviewing everyday people and some of the comments...well..they were concerned that they will kill off the old people, like they do in Canada, so the government won't have to pay for their healthcare. Good grief!

I know! Listening to the BS spewed by about Canada's health care would either make me sooo mad or make me LMAO! It became evident that they (people opposed to significant reform) just make up complete lies or misleading info, and hope other people will believe it...and if they are stupid enough, they willl!

There are also a lot of misconceptions about American health care here in Canada, too.

Posts like this really bust my butt. There are stupid ####### people on both sides of the border. Since moving to Canada I have gotten some really dumb questions, too, about the US.

Funny that you mention this. I was talking to a co-worker and she mentioned that her husband was canadian. I replied "oh really, where is he from?". I meant it as in what part of the country, and she understood. I ask this often when talking to someone and find out that they are from or have lived in an area that I have lived in.

Yes, i'm sure it happens all the time - but unfortunately there probably aren't enough Americans living in Canada here on VJ to start a thread about it

Completely off topic, when people find out my Sister is Canadian (she lives in the U.S.) they ask her about Canadian Health care in an intelligent manner, I see nothing wrong with people asking about some of the propaganda that has been broadcast to American audiences - they are just saying, hey, this is what we are being told, what is your experience - I see that as a good thing

Yeah, you're completely right, TM.

Unfortunately, I've never had experience like your sister has. :( Anytime health care has been brought up here the people I have been speaking to do not want to hear anything that might be "good" about the US health care system.

Ah well.

I used the wireless at a Tim Horton's in Rhode Island today and when my Yahoo homepage came up it was the Canadian one.

So it seems that our neighbors from the north are trying to corral converts by any means possible.

That is a good thing.

So far, the only experiences I've had with Americans talking about the healthcare reform are filled with the Republicans complaining about how flawed the system is and how it will bring the country down - and how it's not a country made of hand-outs, etc. I always just kinda stay quiet when that happens, because I think people forget that the UK also has free healthcare (because the US shares its border with Canada so they have that for comparison). Then again, my husband's family are pretty much made of right-wingers, so I tend to ignore a lot of what they say. :P
