My parents recently got thet visa and they are coming here on jan last. Thay do want to come and forth to home county and USA. How long they can stay in home county at once...and how long they have to stay USA . Thanks.

Reshari,

you petitioned for your parents to become lawful permanent residents (LPR) of the United States of America. Once your petition is approved and your parents receive their green cards, they are expected to live here permanently.

Technically, they can leave for up to a year without problems (even up to two years with a reentry permit), but they cannot come and go frequently as this would indicate that they only visit the United States to maintain their resident status. If an Immigration Officer has such a suspicion, their status can be terminated.

Only US citizens can come and go as they please, and live abroad for as long as they want. The permanent resident status is a privilege to live in the US permanently, but also a mandate to do so.

In a nutshell, your parents can visit Nepal once in a while, even for a few months, but they should live the majority of the time in the USA.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . My parents is planning to come on Jan and now they only want to stay for 2-3 months. It is good to buy 2 way tickets (coz it is cheaper) or its good idea to buy one way. Thanks.

Buying round trip tickets is okay. Remember that every time your parents enter the US, they have to present their green cards. The immigration official may flag them if they spend too much time outside the US. The green cards are not intended for people who are living outside the US but only want to visit so they can maintain the green cards. Too much outside the US could mean the revocation of their green cards and any immigration petitions they may file for their other children in Nepal.
