Hello!

I'm almost filling my N-400 and i was wondering if USCIS allows some kind of index sheet in front with the list of documents or I should just separate them with a clip?

Your opinion is greatly appreciated

Index sheet helps them out with whats in the file also what order they can find it in. Using paperclips help also but if you use an index sheet you can probably just use one large clip to hold the whole thing together for them instead of tons of little ones.

Through out my process of immigration from filing the I-485, I-751 and the N-400 I have always included an index page. I think it makes their life a little easier to decipher what is in your package. It may also move your case along quicker so they don't have to hunt and peck through everything. Just my opinion

Maybe you meant filing, think more about filling when at the diner table. Yeah, we went out of our way to make life easy for who or whatever looks over our application, indexing, categorizing, and highlighting the key information.

Really don't know how the USCIS, would think each person has a quota to open and review each file per day. If so, may get teed off and send your application back for some reason if it's a mess. Did learn that a different person files your approved application, while our I-751 was misplaced, really can't think of a way to reward that person so it's filed correctly.

See the USCIS general guidelines page

http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/men...00045f3d6a1RCRD

In preparing your packet, please take note of the following:

* Do not use binders or folders that cannot be easily disassembled.

* Use ACCO fasteners to hold together thick or bulky applications or petitions. Two-hole punching the top of the material for easy placement in the file is appreciated.

* The use of tabs assist in locating items listed as attachments. The tabs should be placed on the bottom and not the side for ease in filing.

* Avoid using heavy-duty staples; instead use ACCO fasteners or heavy clips.

* Avoid submitting originals unless specifically required. Avoid submitting oversized documentation

Near the back of the M-476, there's a checklist of filing requirements. What we did is write a cover letter that more-or-less followed that checklist, omitting things that weren't relevant to our case.

To whom it may concern,

Please find the following submission of an N-400 application for naturalization and related documents.

* N-400

* Photocopy of both sides of the permanent resident card

* Two passport-style color photographs

* Fee of $###.##

* Copy of spouse's passport, as proof of spouse's citizenship

* ... etc. A line for each item included.

We used a two-hole punch at the top of every document, and bound it together with an Acco clip. Then at the bottom, we put a tab on each major item, writing a brief word or two describing the item.

By following the checklist format, it hopefully will help you organize everything in the order they're expecting it, and will help you avoid accidentally forgetting to include something that's important.

Hi Ecuaciones0809,

I included a cover letter and index list with my N-400 application, which detailed:

-On what basis I was applying for citizenship

-Why I wanted citizenship

-And the detailed index list of 95+ pages of evidence included with my applicaiton

Cover letters and Indexes are not manditory. However, I included such, as I wanted to be more organized that way.....

As well, I sent my application in an ACCO folder with an ACCO clip, as suggested by the USCIS...

ACCO folders are available at any office supply store (staples, office max, business depot, etc.)....

Hope this helps. Good luck on your journey too.
