I went to apply for my Fiances' SSN today at our local office and was told by the officer that because my fiance has not been here for at least 10 days we could not apply for it and to came back after she has been here for at least 10 days. I hadn't heard any of this mentioned on here before, so was wondering if this is new, or a bunch of BS. The guidelines says to apply right away. I provided Origianal BC and certified Translated copy and also her Passport with I-94.

In many cases it takes a week or so for the information to get into the system. The VJ guide does recommend waiting a couple of weeks.

I waited like 12 days and all was fine. The guides do say to wait as you won't be in their systems yet. They say 2 weeks but I couldn't wait that long. So just try again when it's been at least 10 days.

yes, you can apply for the SSN even if not married, the I-94 shows that fiance(e) has K-1 status, and therefore is eligible as a "Legal Alien Authorized to Work" -- if you check that box on the form you shouldn't have a problem getting one and you don't need a "reason".

For documents all I needed was the application form and my passport with the I-94 and visa in it. I brought my long-form birth certificate but she didn't ask for it.
