Wow, I didn't read it all, but I think that was a 6 page pissing contest. I'm impressed. Anyways, to the subject: I don't believe it. I may not live in the ghetto, but I don't really think there are people starving in America. I don't see it. I know people that are on foodstamps that wouldn't starve without them but qualified and figured there was no reason to turn them down. Most people in the US are on the verge of having to make their lifestyle less extravagant. That doesn't mean that they are on the verge of poverty.

On the subject of Australia, it very well may be better; I don't know. But the price of an apartment doesn't really effect the quality of life. It just means you have a housing bubble. If the same apartment in Sydney costs 3 times what it costs in Boston, explain to me why it's better to live in Sydney.

That was an example. Property prices there are not overinflated. They are not a result of flipping or any other pyramid scheme style property gimmick. There must be a reason why the rest of the world has suffered quite hard in this crisis yet they have sailed through. Ultimately their prices are a direct result of people wanting to live there. Even though homes are severely unaffordable, more and more people continue to move there. The only thing stopping millions from move there a day is their strict immigration policy.

Australia is ranked highly in almost every international quality of life ranking. They are ranked second in the world for Human Development Index (aka best country to live in). This is just one of many internationally recognized rankings that I have posted before.

What I don't understand is why the animosity. Is it that Americans don't accept international rankings? Or is it a case of people refusing to accept that others are doing things better than the US? Australia's priority has been to improve the quality of life for their average Joe and they have successfully achieved that. Whereas, the US has different priorities.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Poverty is alive and kicking (chronic) here. Definitely much worse than what I have seen in AUS. Many many times worse. For starters, welfare payments in AUS are the equivalent of someone working a 40 hour week minimum wage job here.

US style Ghettos are also non existent there. Never seen a boarded up neighborhood either. Never seen a trashed up neighborhood and I lived in a city of 4 million.

Posted this a while back: Chernobyl 2006 vs Detroit 2009

Detroit actually looks like something out of call of duty. This is the same scene in numerous cities throughout America. Feel free to find the same in AUS.

Couple of years back I went with a group to one of the poorest counties in the nation to bring food and Christmas gifts. Even though adverts were done ahead of time, we still ended up donating items to a local shelter on the way out of town..as we couldn't find enough takers.

We brought 3 large box type trucks packed full of toys. clothes and food and had about a Pick-up trucks worth left over. To be honest, I was really expecting to see poverty but most people dressed.... looked and drove cars that any middle class person would. However I did see a few folks who really seemed thankful and needy.

Well I may make the run again this year as I see they are asking for "helpers" to pack the boxes, make up the food packs and load the trucks not to mention deliver, set-up and keep order at the outlet points.

Ole Danno just wants to do his part in helping the "less fortunate" ( most often known as the, Less ambitious or slow learners when it comes to life lessons).... but I am mindful of: "there but by the grace Of God go I".

If I do go, I would expect more "takers" this time as the economy has had no recovery and only growing unemployment.

Bottom line, I am still looking for Real Poverty in America.

Either way, if I find it or not.. I will give a report and shoot some pics too.

1 in 6....QUIT EXAGGERATING!!!

In poverty: 49 million

US population: 303 million

303/49 = 6.18 ~ 1 in 6

The US measure to consider whether someone is in poverty is ridiculous anyway. If the US used Canada's, Europe's or Australia's measure of poverty, I can guarantee the numbers would we way higher.

Come on bud. There is only one party I can think of that allows corporations to underpay Americans, ship jobs abroad and refuse to give adequate aid to the poor; all in the name of capitalism. Country first to me means our people first, not the Waltons first.

Dividends and profits are now prioritized over what is best for the country. A CEO in the 60's earned about 24 times their employees' salaries. They now earn close to 300 times; in many cases even higher.

Corporations are half the problem. The other half is that US consumers don't care where something comes from, just the price. A good portion of the these el cheapo things are produced overseas.

I own a construction business. You don't. Next.

My family is in property and construction. My brother is an executive for one of the largest construction companies in Aus. His one project is probably worth more than your entire company. Next

He's around your age. However he doesn't to mail order brides.

Please lets watch the personal stabs like this. Remember that we are a family community for immigration and attacks like this bring down the standard of VJ. I appreciate your consideration of this -- thank you.

Brother C, you and I know that's right.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
