DS-230 Birth certificate

Hi all,

I am in the process of filling out my DS-230 packet.

I noticed on the USCIS website, it states that the birth certificate you have to submit, must have both of your parents names on it.

My birth certificate is a 'short version'. Basically, this is was what issued to my parents when they registered my birth and the 'long' version, was kept by the registrar.

For all previous correspondence for my application, I have been using the short version with no problems, (so far).

It has my name, sex, DOB and place of birth and registration.

Has anyone else submitted this short version for their DS-230, or am I to order a copy of the long one that includes my parents names.

It's an English certificate BTW.

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I can't seem to find anything similar.

Thanks in advance :)

I feared as much...thanks so much for the reply :)

I will order a copy tomorrow. It seems they accepted the short version for everything else, as we are this far along, but at least they will have a copy should they need it.

thanks again :)

This is the only time your birth certificate has been needed in the process so far. If you sent the short version, they accepted it because they didn't need any version of your birth certificate yet.

Hmm, that's strange, as they specifically asked for a copy of the front and back...I think it was for the I-130...maybe it's not necessary any more?

Nope, it's still needed but it's requested at the NVC level

Birth certificates

Obtain the original, or certified copy, of the birth record of each family member (yourself, your spouse, and all unmarried children under the age of 21).

The certificate must contain the:

Person’s date of birth

Person’s place of birth

Names of both parents, and

Annotation by the appropriate authority indicating that it is an extract from the official records.

Good luck.

That's for petitioners only and only if born in the USA. The foreign spouse provides the birth certificate at the NVC stage or at interview. A naturalized USC need not provide a birth certificate. I take it you are the foreign spouse.

Yes I am the foreign spouse and can guarantee I had to send copies of the front and back of my birth certificate already....maybe my husbands attorney was playing safe.

The request this time, for the DS-230, is the second time I was asked to send it, but like I mentioned, it states I need the 'long version', which I have now ordered and it should be here tomorrow.

Thanks again :)

Yes, I expect the attorney was taking the belt and suspenders approach. The point is the short for was accepted the first time because it wasn't needed at all.

I was just speaking with the NVC today to see if I had a Dec interview - no luck :), but the operator did mentiont that I would need to take my birth certificate along. I had sent the short version (only one my mother had) but apparently this is not enough.

I have ordered a new copy through http://www.bmd-certificates.co.uk/articles...te-england.html which will hopefully provide them with what they need.

The only good thing about waiting for the interview is that I keep on finding posts on VJ that show me better ways / information that I need to be successful at the interview.

Sorry for high jacking the tread....

I am about to fill my DS-230. My birth certificate is very old and everything is hand written with stamp and signature of the municipal corp. The problem I have is, it has my fathers first name and middle name but no last name. For my mother, only the first name is appear on it. MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE MY LAST NAME. I can't get another copy because I was born in INDIA and I am CANADIAN citizen and live in CANADA.

Also, do I have to send any documents with DS-230 (in original and/or copy) or just gather them and take them to interview.

thanks

Hi,

Yes you will need to send in original civil documents (and a photo copy of each civil document) with your DS-230.

The birth certificate may be a problem, you may require further proof.

Birth Certificates (India) link

Available. Prior to l970, the reporting of births was voluntary. Birth certificates of Europeans, Anglo-Indians, Armenian Christians, Jews and Parsis born prior to l970 may be obtained from the State Registrar General of Births, Deaths, and Marriages. No standard or uniform certificate is issued by the authorities. In addition, acceptable certificates may often be obtained from the municipal and rural registration records, which are maintained under the state laws. Europeans, Anglo-Indians, and Indian Christians are usually able to obtain church baptismal certificates.

Under the Registration of Births and Deaths Act of l969, births are required to be registered in almost all of the States and Union Territories of India. Birth certificates are available to any applicant born on or after April l, l970, upon payment of a nominal fee to the appropriate authority.

In cases where birth certificates from the authorities are unavailable or contain insufficient information regarding the birth or the parents, a sworn affidavit executed by either the parents, if living, or other close relatives older than the applicant, may be submitted. It should set forth the relationship between the deponent and the applicant, how well the deponent knows the applicant, date and place of the applicant's birth, the names of both parents, and any other related facts. Such an affidavit, when a birth certificate is unavailable, should be accompanied by a document from a competent governmental authority confirming that the certificate does not exist, or no longer exists.

Thanks for the quick response. Just to clarify, I have to submit ORIGINAL birth certificate and ORIGINAL police clearance certificate. As a side note, I had chose to do my submission process via email (scanned pdf) when I sent my DS-3032 to NVCMontreal@state.gov. Does that have any affact?

I was immigrated to Canada with my parents. At that time I used the same birth certificate. I may just take chance with what I have for now.
