We had to go down to the office three times and finally got the director involved to get my husband's ssn. Be persistent. In person will accomplish your goals easier than over the phone.

Hello Gi! We just visited the SSA today, it's been 3 weeks and we have not received my son's SS card yet.

We have our GC as well. The office told us that my name was mispelled, that's why there was a hold on the release of a number for him, even the parents name on his application must be correct because they counter checked it with DHS and they found out the error was on them. If there is even one letter mispelled they will not issue a number. Good thing we went there and showed them my GC and social security card. And they said sorry about the delay.

I advise you to visit them again and show them your GC, and passport and marriage certificate.

Maybe they made an error in entering your name in their database and they could not countercheck it with DHS, thus causing the delay in issuing you a SS number.

Good luck Kapatid and God bless you!

You messed up and let ignorant government workers deprive you of an SSN until after you get a green card.

K-1s (if that is what you are, would help to tell us) are eligible for an SSN immediately on arrival until day 76 after arrival. I suggest you go get it immediatley on arrival. (Actually, the next day as the CBP "SAVE" system updates you legal entry each night at 12:01 am) After filing the application you can get the number the NEXT DAY. DO NOT leave the SS office until they confirm your application is accepted and they give you the phone number to call to get your SSN the NEXT DAY. NEXT DAY. If they tell you ANYTHING else, get a supervisor and DO NOT leave until you are processed correctly. You may have to go several levels up to find a trained employee. Also bring they paper from the SS webiste listing K-1s as eligible. It is often necessary for us to do on the job training of government workers.

Government workers are notorious for making up answers when they do not know them, rather than ask a supervisor. They will also do this when they run your health care. ignore them, it is BS. A K-1 IS entitled to an SSN.

My wife applied 16 hours after arriving, had he SSN the next day and was added to our bank accounts, insurance, credit cards, enrolled in college and had a 50% scholarship to a private university 48 hours after arriving. Her card arrived in 6 days...whi needs the damn card? You only need the number. If you wait any longer than that is is because you are allowing an untrained clerk to trample on your rights.

One question that I do have, if you already have a GC, how did you fill out the I-485. Did you already know your SSN or just leave that question "N/A"?

I would recommend going back to the office. When we applied for my wife's SSN, the (obviously not-incredibly-smart) worker told us he couldn't verify her in the system (even though we went 2 weeks after she had arrived) and it had to get sent to national processing. 1 month later (and a couple of fruitless phonecalls - seriously, I wouldn't even bother calling) we just decided to go back to the SSN center. We got a much smarter, sharper guy, who said that he verified my wife in the system, deleted the national processing (which was still pending and hadn't moved at all) and that we would get a card in the mail in about 2 weeks. Sure enough, 15 days later, we got her card in the mail.

it's really hard to give a good answer to your question, as i'm unable to determine what your current status is.

I did read your timeline, but i'm guessing it's not up to date.

obviously yer in the usa, or you wouldn't be applying, right?

11 weeks is way past any window for a k-1... thats 77 days.

75 days past yer POE date, and it's not possible to get a SSN until you have gc or ead in hand.

i have to assume that you got the run around when you went in the first time, and also assume you didn't go in on the 2 week POE date.

I feel bad for ya, but this is one of them calendar things you were supposed to pay attention to.

Good luck with the waiting - it's gonna suck, a lot.

I'm sorry you decided to 'call' instead of 'going in', as well - you've experienced, first hand (albeit only the telephone ) just how incompetent the first-level SSA tele-operators are.

We applied for her's last month and they said it would be till the end of Dec that we would get it.

One question that I do have, if you already have a GC, how did you fill out the I-485. Did you already know your SSN or just leave that question "N/A"?

I thought, if you already have a green card, the I-485 is NOT required?

We applied for her's last month and they said it would be till the end of Dec that we would get it.

you've been flimflammed by a government employee.

GO BACK and apply again.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

SSA does not verify the parent's names with immigration.

RM 00202.140 Form SS-5 Item 8.A - Mother's Maiden Name:

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100202140

B. Procedure

Verify that the mother's full first, middle, and maiden names are entered in the appropriate spaces. The information provided by the applicant must not be in conflict with the evidence submitted and/or the Numident (SSN) record.

1. Applications for Original SSNs

"Foreign-born noncitizen applicants may not have documents to substantiate their parents' names. You may accept the allegations of the applicant regarding parent data, absent evidence to the contrary provided the applicant completes either the “self” or the “natural/adoptive parent” block in Item 17. However, when there is a question about the relationship and the person does not have a birth certificate to submit, the SSA employee can assume there is a parent-child relationship if they were issued visas by the Department of State (DOS) at about the same time. The DOS determines that there is a parent-child relationship before issuing a visa. The SSA employee may also assume relationship if the foreign-born noncitizen parent and foreign-born noncitizen child were admitted to the U.S. at the same time and place or they have passports showing the same family name. When accepting an alleged parent name, annotate “alleged” or “no evidence” in the margin by the name."

RM 00202.142 Form SS-5 Item 8.B. - Mother's SSN:

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100202142

NOTE: The first and last (or maiden) name listed for each of the parents on the child's SS-5 must exactly match the first and last (or maiden) name shown on that parent's Numident record in either the NAA or NL2 (Name at Birth) fields. If the parent name alleged on the child's SS-5 is correct and does not appear in either of those fields on any iteration of the parent's Numident record, the parent's Numident record must be updated with the correct name before the child's application can be processed.

When the mother's name shown on the SS-5 is different from the name shown on the mother's Numident record, resolve the discrepancy before processing the child's SS-5.

-- If the mother's name is shown incorrectly on the SS-5, but the name is shown correctly on her Numident record and the child's evidence of age, correct the name on the child's SS-5 and annotate it as an “FO write in” if the applicant is not present, otherwise, have the applicant sign the MES generated application showing the correct information.

-- If the mother's maiden name is missing from her Numident, obtain evidence to establish the new data per RM 00203.210 and process an SS-5 for the mother to add this information before inputting the child's application.

-- If the mother's name is shown incorrectly on the child's birth certificate (or other evidence of age), but is shown correctly on her Numident record and on the child's SS-5, do not process the child's SS-5. Advise the parent to obtain a document from the issuing agency with the correct mother's name.

First off, unless someone at the SSA office has given you their number and has told you to call them, calling is a waste of time. You need to go into the office.

Did you have your Form I-551 (Green Card) when you applied? If you didn't I would ask them to delete the application and reapply with the I-551. Your status will still need to be verified, but since you now have permanent resident status, hopefully you will verify as having that status.

You don't use N/A, you write "NONE" or "Applied For"

Are you saying she applied for the SSN last month and the SSA office told you it will be next month before the SSN is assigned?

If that is the case I would be back in the office to ask a manger what is going on. The status verification is a three step process. The first they do while you are in the office. If that doesn't verify they send a secondary electronic request and that normally comes back in around a week. If the response to that is that immigration needs to see the document, they mail a photocopy of the front and back of the immigration document along with Form G-845. Figure on that taking around a month. If the SSA doesn't get the G-845 back within a month they have a number to call to get the verification over the phone.

How is this any help to her? Plus if she got her Form I-551 in September and applied 11 weeks ago she was probably way past the time she could have been assigned an SSN based on her K-1 status, so no "ignorant government workers deprive" her of her SSN based on K-1 status.

You keep repeating your story that you need to be thanking God every day actually happened. People with K-1 status are better off 99.999 percent of the time waiting ten days before applying.

Plus SSA has not given out SSNs over the phone for quite a while.
