Talking about controversial symbolic gestures, this one created quite some controversy when it happened but it was the right thing to do.

Warschauer Kniefall

The incident took place during visit to a monument to the Nazi-era Warsaw Ghetto Uprising on December 7, 1970, in what was then the communist People's Republic of Poland. After laying down a wreath, Brandt, very surprisingly, and to all appearances spontaneously, knelt. He remained silently in that position for a short time, surrounded by a large group of dignitaries and press photographers.

It should be noted in this context that Brandt himself had actively resisted the early Nazi regime, and had spent most of the time of Hitler's reign in exile. The occasion of Brandt's visit to Poland at the time was the signing of the Treaty of Warsaw between West Germany and the Peoples Republic of Poland, guaranteeing German acceptance of the new borders of Poland. The treaty was one of the Brandt-initiated policy steps (the 'Ostpolitik') to ease tensions between West and East during the Cold War.

On the same day, Brandt signed the Treaty of Warsaw, which acknowledged the Oder-Neiße-Line as the final German border with Poland. Both actions attracted controversy within Germany, similar to the whole Ostpolitik, gaining only a narrow majority in public opinion. It was disputed within his own party, which had had (compare Herbert Hupka) a significant share of voters within former expellees which mostly went to the conservative parties.

According to a Der Spiegel survey of the time, 48% of all West Germans thought the "Kniefall" was exaggerated, 41% said it was appropriate and 11% had no opinion[2] . The Kniefall was a symbolic action the opposition tried to use against Brandt, e.g. within a Constructive Vote of No Confidence in April 1972 which he survived by only two votes. The "Willy-Wahl", Brandt's landslide win in following elections was as well based on most German views that Brandt's Ostpolitik - symbolized by the Kniefall - as well as his reformist domestic policies was helping Germany to gain international reputation and was to be supported. It led his SPD party to its best-ever federal election result in late 1972.

To the detriment of the USA, for decades the USA has been protectionist (sorry - but I lived in Detroit for 10 years) and at time seems unwilling to participate in the global economy, and instead looked for political answers to issues of competition. Its ironic! Competition is the very impetus which America has thrived upon! Our very nature as a Nation positions us for success!

I want America to win in the Global Economy, but if we can't even make the simplest of cultural/respectful gestures (bow = handshake) then we will lose. I'm surprised that on a multicultural board such as this that this is even news.

I lived in Michigan and Indiana even worked for car part manufacturer and you're way off this. Foreign car makers increased their market share over the last 30 years and built their plants largely in the South. GM and Chrysler had to beg for Federal bailouts even though the made better quality cars (still behind the Japanese though) than they have historically with no significant foreign competition prior to 1973.

Can't hate something that doesn't exist ;)

 God does exist, beloved MC

Prove it! :hehe:

Allah will have you beheaded. Just wait.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Its a joke that these people think they can "disprove" God by using math. They truly do live in la-la land. Even if I were atheist, I'd have to concede that I could never know for sure that "there is no God". It would always have to be something I believed.

Science doesn't interest you Joe, you don't see the point of it, hence why you believe spending millions of dollars finding out if there is water on the Moon, or travelling to Mars is a pointless waste of time. Your reasoning, because no one can prove, to your satisfaction, that it might benefit you directly. Yours Joe is an egocentric belief system which is ironic considering how you claim to love god.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Again, you can't disprove God with math. Saying "you wouldn't understand" is elitist behavior, which you've demonstrated on more than one occasion.

I am proud to be in the educated elite. ;)

However, I did not claim to be able to 'disprove' the existence of god with math. Perhaps you need to re read.

Perhaps not explicitly, but you implied it with the "God isn't there" comment.

Educated does not mean Elite. You need to look up elitist. "do your homework"
