Hey Bryonm4, I used orbitz. We paid 710.00 using Delta. But we bought them 3 weeks ago. Now they are 1800.00. we leave for Vietnam on Nov 29th come back dec 29.

It depends. what dates are you trying to travel and from where? Are you trying to fly into SGN?

Prices depend on a lot of factors. Without more information, its difficult to say what might be the reason you are seeing high prices.

If you are leaving from a well connected hub airport (like LAX) you will pay lower prices than you would if you have to connect from a another airport. Prices vary greatly based on day of week, seasons, holidays, and just general demand.

If you do your research you can generally find reasonably priced tickets. Figure out what airlines go to your destination and pay attention to sales offered by those airlines. If you have to connect within the US, you might do better with a separate ticket for the connection.

I just got a round trip ticket to Bangkok for $980 and a one way for my wife and son for $950 on NWA. Going 22 and coming back thanksgiving.

I only took me 8 hours of check all the dates ranges to find it.

I used http://www.farecompare.com/ to find it, but when to NWA to buy it.

Try Kayak.com i usually find the best deals there. you can put in your leave and return dates +/- 3 days and see all the best prices.

I booked my ticket last week. I paid just over $1000 for a round trip ticket - San Francisco to HCM - with an open return date (30 day window), including VN visa fees. I used one of the U.S. Tours offices in Oakland. They are a VN specific travel agency with offices in California and Texas.

Anyway, the agent told me that the prices to Asia go up dramatically starting around the 10th, and the return flights go up dramatically around December 27th. This isn't so much because the airlines are raising their prices, but because the cheapest seats are booked well in advance by people taking advantage of the Christmas holiday to go home and visit family in Asia. I'm leaving on the 8th and coming back before Christmas, so I managed to get a decent fare (though still not the rock bottom rate).

Last year I decided to spend a couple of weeks in VN just after Christmas, leaving on the 26th. I booked in early December. The cheapest I could find online was about $2500. The agent reserved a seat for me at the $2500 price, and also reserved me a place in line for a cancellation. The next day, somebody canceled and I got a seat for $1500, so we canceled the other reservation. I don't know if you can do this online. It might be worth calling a good travel agent.

Christmas and New Years ( For Asia flights, Chinese new year can be also) are peak periods. Its going to be difficult to get a cheap ticket. You will find better prices if you can go before or just after Christmas.

Got mine for $770 at a Vietnamese Video Audio place. You should try asking around China/Vietnamese town near your area. They got pretty good deal compare to the one you search online. Visa and everything included. It really depends on when you're going and when you purchase your ticket. My friend ask for the same date and get a different price in a matter of 1 day difference. He call yesterday and got a price for $800 and call today and it was $1000+. Good luck with your search.

I traveled United before but there tickets are around 7k right now so I had to use Northwest and go to Minniapolis then Chicago Then take Korean Airlines to Korea then to Ho Chi Minh

I have never been on Northwest or Korean airlines but the food on the Unitied Planes doesnt agree with me so I hope if the other ones serve food its alot better.

I used to buy mine directly from EVA Airlines leaving SEA. Plane from Fairbanks AK to Seattle WA was always free (miles) and EVA always gave me a free upgrade for being in the club. Usually around 1000 total.

Bryon, here's why I asked before where you were flying from and when. I never use an agent. I find that the best rates can typically be found by buying the tix directly from the airline on the website. I almost invariably fly China Airlines through TPE to SGN because they tend to be the cheapest and have good connection times for me since I have to come from Boston. On my upcoming biz trip to Asia, my corporate agent was not able to buy some tickets for me as cheap as i could get them from the website so part of the trip was booked outside the travel agent system.

But back to your flight. I assumed that you were flying from Omaha since your local office says nebraska. Right now, if you travel out on 12/14 and can return 12/29, you can fly SFO/SGN/SFO for $1304. Then buy a NWA ticket OMA/SFO/OMA for $224. Total cost $1528. Not bad for last minute and flying at Christmas.
