How long for Montreal to respond to email?

It really depends. I've e-mailed them and had a reply within an hour, and I've also waited over 5 days for a reply.

Did you e-mail them? When you did, did you get an auto response sent to your inbox shortly after? If not then It didn't go through. If so then it did, but if your question can be answered with their FAQ's they may not bother to respond. Did you put your MTL case number on the subject line? Your chances of getting a reply are greatly improved if you did. If you e-mailed this weekend they didn't get a reply its because the consulate is officially closed Saturday's and Sunday's. There is also a possibility that your e-mail got lost in their busy inbox if you didn't send it during regular business hours.

Never thought sending an e-mail could be so complicated eh?

My lawyer sent the email in theory over a week ago, and I was suprised that they said they still had not got a response back.

You can also send an e-mail with questions, your lawyer doesn't need to be the one to e-mail

Good luck

No ONE, care more about ur case than YOU, surely not ur lawyer. When u email the consulate ensure you put ur case # in the subject line.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Yeah, I wouldn't trust a lawyer to do that sort of thing on your behalf.

I'm not criticizing your decision to have a lawyer handle your immigration (my wife and I briefly considered it at one point before I found VJ), but the more hands-on you are with the process, the more prepared you'll be when the interview comes up. Despite the daunting complexity of the entire process at first glance, there is a kind of logic to it, and it becomes fairly straight-forward after you do your research on all the steps.

As mentioned earlier, ALWAYS have your case number as the first thing in the subject line when you send an email.

Most of the time within a few hours, only once did it take till the next day. Be sure to give you file number, and both names and DOB's.

I emailed Montreal twice between my P3 and P4, and though I received the auto-reply each time, I never actually received a response.

I too sent an email to Montreal about some of the questions from the P3 documents (ie. DS156). Someone forwarded it to the actual visa office in DC... and someone from that office was kind enough to write an actual official letter dated Nov 11, letterhead and all, and email me that letter on Nov 13 at 12:50 pm, after my interview :P

I think it depends on your question. When its something they can answer, they will get back to you right away. My fiance emailed them about when I was getting my interview date 2 months ago, and never got a response :D

Finally married... and still married... ;)

Generally they answered my email within 24/48 hours. I had sent quite a few emails as well and all of them were answered.

They generate an auto responce with " general answers " if the embassy feels its not specific enough to answer and one of the general answers fills the quiry they wont send an email answer and expect you to look at the auto responce answers that they sent to specific questions.

I sent an email last Monday and have got nothing back yet. I did put my case number in the subject line and did get the auto response. I did read somewhere they said to expect an answer back in 4-5 business days so hopefully I'm getting something in my in box tomorrow.

I didn't have the best experience with MTL answering my questions....I sent maybe 4 emails throughout the process, and out of those only 1 got really answered...in auto-response they say that if the answer is included in their FAQs then they consider your email answered...except sometimes you might be asking about something specific and they do not care to read through...

Keep em short...

I sen emails, and a few times got nothing...sent it again, and got reply within a day...they have many reps going through them...if you get no reply within a week, send it again...

it's not like you're bugging them....when I sent an email and resent it after a week and got a reply right away, I just assumed my first one got lost...

I sent two emails during the process and got no replies beyond the auto-reply FAQ. That said, both my questions were about timelines for interviews, which I think is one of those subjects that they delete with extreme prejudice.

Generally I think if you're not asking something specific to your case, you're not going to get a specific response, and they consider "can I get an estimate on my interview date?" as a general question.
