Well, maybe I misunderstood your earlier post about it being a "Southern Scotland" thing.

All I'm trying to say is (as far as I know) it's widely slathered all about the UK on everything.

That was not my post. I was telling her since my husband is NOT from the south (at least I'm fairly certain Livi isnt south lol) that she was mistaken.

I didnt quite get the whole history of brown sauce link cos I never asked what it was so I was confused by your response.

Mine is from Lossiemouth and says they don't use it quite as much on everything there as others do...I guess since everything from Lossiemouth is pretty much South maybe that is why he said it...LOL!

All I know is it tastes like A-1 and to me, that reserves it for steak!!

You wont find proper bread in the USA......

You might want to reconsider the yorkshire puds for Xmas.....they are best with beef, and most English folks will be having turkey for christmas. However dont let me be the one that says you cant have yorkshire puds with turkey.....Good Luck.

I agree with what others have said, its nice to have some things from home, but we do adjust and substitute, I am looking forward to going home in January.....proper bread toasted with butter...........Heaven!!!

And if you're suffering for a decent cuppa, my husband can make do with Tetley's British Blend. Our Wal-Mart used to carry it but they've stopped; we get it at Kroger's now. We use an extra bag in the pot compared to full-fledged teas we order online or get from back home. So far as tea in the US goes, I've come to believe that if you can find a decent substitute then you are still only halfway home. You need a decent teapot (I imported an authentic Brown Betty) and you need to warm the interior of the pot by swirling and then dumping a bit of the boiled water BEFORE you put the bags in for steeping.

I've been hooked on PG Tips, I buy them at World Market... they have them all over the place, I think...

I'm going to make Yorkshire pudding for Christmas as well! I made a test batch in a mini muffin pan, with lil' smokies in the middle... and american version of "Toad in the Hole" ? They were DELICIOUS.. aside from a tad greasy.. but that's okay!

He's Scottish and I think they normally do turkey too but he made me roast beef and yorkshire pudding when I came for christmas last yr. We had the huge turkey meal with his mum and my folks three weeks ago for Thanksgiving. I kinda like the idea of blendin traditions and making our own.

He gets a bread called whole meal or something like that but I think it has no flavor and is somewhat like sawdust in consistency.lol We got nice bread in bakery tho.lol

ooh those might make a nice appetizer for another meal.

We can get PG Tipps at our Kroger store.

It's not our favorite tea by any long shot though so we pass it by for British Blend (which at least to us seems the most like good old British Tetley).

Hi there! My husband is Scottish (from the Highlands area) and totally agrees with all the comments regarding proper bread. We've been making do with the nicer breads at Kroger and French bread when we can find it cheap. He really misses proper bacon and sausage. I think he really misses IRN BRU too though because he used to drink it like it was going out of fashion when back in Scotland.

One thing I miss and I know he does too are meat and potato pies from Harry Gows. There were DELICIOUS!!! I haven't found a proper recipe for those yet and would love to learn how to make them.

I'd love to find some great Scottish recipes myself. We tend to take turns on the cooking. I usually cook the sweet stuff, he the savory. :)

As far as "proper" bacon goes, isn't it just a different cut than what we Americans are used to having? I think the cut there is a "back'...I am trying to remember on the fly. You might see if there is a meat market around where you can have it cut the way he likes. My biggest problem is going to be finding affordable lamb when I am surrounded by cattle ranching states...

Our local Sam's Club carries lamb most all year round.

WalMart has it from time to time - a tiny little display up high where you'd never find it if you weren't looking.
