White House to Begin Push on Immigration Overhaul in 2010

Agreed.

Just helping with my husband's job search down here, i've noticed a lot of employers using E-Verify... They did extensive background checks for even the most basic jobs, which is good. The trick is to get every employer to use E-Verify in order for it to work...

If you will look at the voting history of attempts to make E-Verify the law of the land and mandatory you will find that the liberal wing of the Democratic party (which controls the party now) has detered all attempts at it in favor of trading it for mass amnesty of illegal aliens. Mass amnesty first and foremost has been their priority in what they consider to be "immigration reform". At this time E-Verify is voluntary and the system has not been permanently funded. Meaning it has barely passed getting axed several times by the Democratic leadership nor is it mandatory on a meaningful scale. It is purposely limited to keep illegal aliens working until they are amnestied. That is the goal of the Democratic leadership. I think people need to wake up to what is going on. Especially with long term double digit unemployment going on now. This isn't a Democrat or Republican issue...it is an American issue. The Dems are clearly wrong and the public should be hammering them. To be fair, Bush didn't push for E-Verify either, but he isn't here anymore and unemployment wasn't double digit. The Dems need to get with the program and put Americans first for a change.

Despite strong opposition from business groups and a lawsuit, the Obama administration is making E-Verify, an online verification program, mandatory for businesses working with the federal government.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has launched an all-out attack on E-Verify, the successful federal program that allows employers to screen out illegal aliens at the beginning of the hiring process.

Damn those liberal business groups and that librul US Chamber of Commerce.

You know damned good and well why the US Chamber of Commerce opposes E-Verify. They love cheap unregulated labor. Dems love cheap votes. So we also know why the Democratic leadership opposes it and has limited its mandatory use to the the tiny pool of federal contracts. That is spit in the ocean to what would be accomplished by making it mandatory for every employer in the USA. As I said, this program has been hobbled in favor of a political agenda of mass amnesty for illegal aliens. Politically they cannot eliminate E-Verify, so they give the false impression to the ignorant that they are protecting the American worker when they clearly are not. If they were...E-Verify would already be the law of the land. They shot it down numerous times. Riddle me that Batman!

The Republicans had 6 years where they held a majority in Congress and had their guy in the White House. If they'd be all that supportive of e-verify, then it would indeed have been the law of the land for some time. Only, it isn't. So to put the blame solely on the Democrats is a cheap shot. Neither party will make it happen because both parties are owned big business which opposes the program.

First of all...I'm not a Republican or a Democrat...I'm a conservative American Independent. Party affiliation runs dead last in my world. I've never given a red cent to either RNC or DNC. I actually donated to Ross Perot's party and campaign when he ran, but ended up not voting for him. It's the only party I ever donated to. I've voted for both parties' candidates in my 35 years of voting eligibility and only support individual candidates. Anyone that goes into a voting booth and pulls the party ticket is just a partisan party hack. I'm not.

That said...Bush is gone and the Republicans are the minority party. To point this fact out is not a "cheap shot" against Democrats. The ball is in their court and,so far, the Democrats have shown their "true colors" regarding this issue. IMO that is not in the best interests of America or Americans.

E-Verify and enforcement of immigration / work authorization laws should not be held hostage for a mass amnesty agenda the American people clearly do not want and is not in our best interests.

You don't have to convince me that an amnesty is a bad idea. I've never been in favor of any such thing. You also don't have to convince me that e-verify should be mandatory across the board. I'm all for it. The fact that businesses get to purchase or kill whatever legislation they want is what the problem is.

Spot on there.

Since the use of illegal aliens is such a widespread problem in the US, e-verify should be mandatory for every single job. Failure to comply should equal a $15K on the spot fine, as well as jail time for repeat offenders.

Even that should have a limit. Fifth separate offense should result in their business license being canceled, followed by a five year ban on the owners running any business.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Not to mention that when groups like LaRaza get a front row seat at the table when immigration reform legislation is written, the final product is similarly tainted. A perfect example is the failed joke of 2006 known as the Kennedy / McCain Bill (aka: The Secure America and Orderly Immigration Act). The American people wanted no part of it and raised holly hell.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995
