White House to Begin Push on Immigration Overhaul in 2010

The results speak for themselves. This flood of illegal aliens and poor people from Northern South America has not had a positive affect (impact) for America. It has drained the country's limited resources and diverted them towards paying for them. It has accelerated the country's downward spiral in most international rankings. That is not my opinion, that is reality.

To the contrary, nations that have had the opposite stance on illegal immigration, that is are strict yet fair, are moving up the ranks yearly. They have also made great strides in improving the quality of life for their residents. As well as provided their new immigrants with a chance, an opportunity, to actually better their life, rather than have them compete with millions of others.

Their approach has been to steadily trickle them in, with just enough entering at once, to allow the country to absorb them. Whereas, the US has had a tsunami of poor uneducated immigrants flood the country. No matter how anyone tries to cut it, it is a disaster.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

If you had 20 million brillliant illegals, there would still be a problem. The problem isn't that the illegals are poor. The problem is the American's who are taking advantage of this and hiring them. And a government that won't make e-verfiy mandatory to help combat the problem. You like to make everything about race and skin color, I don't see it that way.

Being poor is a huge problem considering they are a massive drain on government resources. Most government departments do not verify status.

I think that the Americans who are knowingly hiring illegals should be held accountable. I have more disdain for them than I do for the illegals. Crack down on the American violaters, problem solved.

Agreed.

Just helping with my husband's job search down here, i've noticed a lot of employers using E-Verify... They did extensive background checks for even the most basic jobs, which is good. The trick is to get every employer to use E-Verify in order for it to work...

We also need a REAL migrant visa program for sustaining the workers on America's farms and ranches (one of the few things I agreed with George W. on, in fact). Picking up day laborers doesn't cut it - you need long-term workers that can be trained, and frankly there aren't a lot of Americans who are willing to work that hard for so little pay. We benefit from low grocery prices, and they benefit by going home after harvest. We cut down on people trying to illegally cross, they pay taxes. Don't make it so difficult to prove the need for these industries that they have difficulty finding labor.

There are now...

If you had 20 million illegals with PHD's, there wouldn't be enough good jobs for them either. If they stayed, they'd be in the same boat as the poor. And I do understand what you are saying about the illegal poor draining our resources. I see the government as the problem, for not doing enough to curb the problem.

The fact is that illegal immigrants are a net drain on society. As the chart above also illustrates, even uneducated legal immigrants are a financial drain.

This is why most developed countries trickle them in. Not rocket science. The United States has no money period. It cannot afford to (nor should it) keep on paying for the poor of the world, while leaving the living standards of its citizens to fall. I want my taxes going towards assisting Americans, rather than those who jumped the queue.

Fix America first, then worry about the rest of the world.

If unresticted immigration was a net plus for developed economies, why wouldn't governments give away free airline tickets for all who wish to come to the country of their choice? Or just simply say if you can get here, you're an instant citizen?

Exactly... People beat on about this daily yet the reality does not support this. Look at every single country in 2009 were their average Joe is doing well. Not only do they have a small population, they also have quite a strict immigration policy. Immigrants need to be trickled in for obvious reason. Furthermore, most first world countries no longer just pull a name out of a hat and allow anyone to randomly immigrate. They use a points system, which is adjusted according to the needs and demands of the country. Also why a growing wave of countries have eliminated the 'as long as you are on their soil, you are a citizen at birth' deal.

What gets me about some people here is that the same people who beat on about ghettos and the black man being improvised, also demand the country let millions and millions of poor people in. Somehow, it is then up to wealthy folk to get them jobs and improve their living standards. That is a bloody joke.

Just helping with my husband's job search down here, i've noticed a lot of employers using E-Verify... They did extensive background checks for even the most basic jobs, which is good. The trick is to get every employer to use E-Verify in order for it to work...

If you will look at the voting history of attempts to make E-Verify the law of the land and mandatory you will find that the liberal wing of the Democratic party (which controls the party now) has detered all attempts at it in favor of trading it for mass amnesty of illegal aliens. Mass amnesty first and foremost has been their priority in what they consider to be "immigration reform". At this time E-Verify is voluntary and the system has not been permanently funded. Meaning it has barely passed getting axed several times by the Democratic leadership nor is it mandatory on a meaningful scale. It is purposely limited to keep illegal aliens working until they are amnestied. That is the goal of the Democratic leadership. I think people need to wake up to what is going on. Especially with long term double digit unemployment going on now. This isn't a Democrat or Republican issue...it is an American issue. The Dems are clearly wrong and the public should be hammering them. To be fair, Bush didn't push for E-Verify either, but he isn't here anymore and unemployment wasn't double digit. The Dems need to get with the program and put Americans first for a change.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

Despite strong opposition from business groups and a lawsuit, the Obama administration is making E-Verify, an online verification program, mandatory for businesses working with the federal government.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has launched an all-out attack on E-Verify, the successful federal program that allows employers to screen out illegal aliens at the beginning of the hiring process.

Damn those liberal business groups and that librul US Chamber of Commerce.

You know damned good and well why the US Chamber of Commerce opposes E-Verify. They love cheap unregulated labor. Dems love cheap votes. So we also know why the Democratic leadership opposes it and has limited its mandatory use to the the tiny pool of federal contracts. That is spit in the ocean to what would be accomplished by making it mandatory for every employer in the USA. As I said, this program has been hobbled in favor of a political agenda of mass amnesty for illegal aliens. Politically they cannot eliminate E-Verify, so they give the false impression to the ignorant that they are protecting the American worker when they clearly are not. If they were...E-Verify would already be the law of the land. They shot it down numerous times. Riddle me that Batman!

The Republicans had 6 years where they held a majority in Congress and had their guy in the White House. If they'd be all that supportive of e-verify, then it would indeed have been the law of the land for some time. Only, it isn't. So to put the blame solely on the Democrats is a cheap shot. Neither party will make it happen because both parties are owned big business which opposes the program.

First of all...I'm not a Republican or a Democrat...I'm a conservative American Independent. Party affiliation runs dead last in my world. I've never given a red cent to either RNC or DNC. I actually donated to Ross Perot's party and campaign when he ran, but ended up not voting for him. It's the only party I ever donated to. I've voted for both parties' candidates in my 35 years of voting eligibility and only support individual candidates. Anyone that goes into a voting booth and pulls the party ticket is just a partisan party hack. I'm not.

That said...Bush is gone and the Republicans are the minority party. To point this fact out is not a "cheap shot" against Democrats. The ball is in their court and,so far, the Democrats have shown their "true colors" regarding this issue. IMO that is not in the best interests of America or Americans.

E-Verify and enforcement of immigration / work authorization laws should not be held hostage for a mass amnesty agenda the American people clearly do not want and is not in our best interests.
