My God this is really ridiculous...I think firing that prison officer would have been suffice

Yeah, I'm surprised this thread hasn't stuck with the fact that 2.5 years in prison is ridiculous for this case!

I mean, not only is the judge going overboard in the sentencing of what should be a misdemeanor...he's also going to have a hand in screwing up the life of the child as well, forcing it to be without its mother during those critical first years.

I'm no bleeding heart, but this strikes me as a dumb ruling.

An officer cannot abuse their position of authority by having sex with an inmate. The inmate may look upon it as being forced to acquiesce in order to "protect" themselves. It also puts the inmate at risk from fellow inmates who can use the knowledge as a threat to gain control over them. The Officer has a code of conduct to follow and there are consequences to violations of that code. In addition, the officer smuggled in contraband. Another huge violation. Contraband in the hands of the wrong person can put the safety and the security of both inmates and officers at risk. Three mobile phones? Those are highly sought after in a prison facility and were definitely going to be used for illicit purposes. If the officer is not charged and sentenced for the crimes committed, then the judicial system and the executives who run that penal institution would be sending out a message to everyone..... inmates, fellow officers, the families of the inmates..... that corruption and the abuse of power is a minor and negligible issue.
