I applied for SSN yesterday, and they told me I will receive it in about two weeks. On the form that they printed there was a line stating that I am : Legal alien allowed to work. I told the lady that I came to the US on K1 visa and that I am not allowed to work until I have EAD (employment authorization document) and she told me that I am allowed to work once I receive SSN.

I am a bit confused, since everyone is saying that EAD is a must to have prior for starting work.

Can anyone clarify this?

Thanks

Senka

Senka,

You are employment authorized while you are a K1 - you can work. And consequently you can get a SS card.

But, without an EAD an employer cannot hire you.

There's a subtle but significant difference - semantics can be important.

Yodrak.

When I came on H1B my SSC says only valid with ins authorization. I assume this will be the same when the Green Card arrives. This means you need some form of authorization from USCIS. I appllied for EAD in case H1B expired before I received Green Card.

Canadian married to USC

Entered on H1b visa

June 12 mailed to Chicago lockbox

June 13 RD

June 20 ND I-485, I-130, I-131, I-765

July 6 FP I-485 I-765

RD Interview Nd July 16

Interview August 30

Approved August 30

Green Card Arrived Septmeber 13

Once you have an I-551 stamp or card you can go apply for an unrestricted SSN card and the unrestricted SSN card can be used as proof of authorization to work. Plus the SSN card never expires
