Okay, more of an inconvenience than a crisis, but any help anyone could offer would be most welcome.

Here's the situation: I've had my EAD card for over a month now. I applied for my SSN as soon as I received it. However, I didn't get one because my info wasn't in the system yet. The worry now is that my info still isn't in the system. Now, I've been applying for jobs and have received a few tentative offers, but no-one is willing to take me on with no SSN. So...is there any way I can speed up this process? Anyone I can call or mail?

Just by the by, Like anyone else, I paid for that EAD, and it looks like I'm going to have my Green card before I've even used it. I guess there's no chance of a refund, huh?

Hello,

I was in the same situation of you and lost out on a couple jobs because of it. Basically all I did was keep going into the social security office to see if I was in the system or if it was updated. After about 3 weeks the lady finally said she would give them a call and I got my number the next day. You could call but I doubt that would do anything. You need to actually go in and bug them. Make sure they sent something to immigration to verify your status.

The next problem I had was my social security number not being "valid". I had a job offer at Target until I get a job in my career field (architecture) however, when they did the background check my ssn came back as invalid. Basically I found out that they just weren't updating their database and there was nothing I could do. I lost that job too and I had a ssn :(

I wish you the best in getting you ssn and good luck with the job offers.

Terri

Thanks, Terri. What you did is pretty much what I've been doing. Gonna go to the office and bother them again tomorrow. I've not been in for a week or so. Weirdly, my job offer is also at Target.

So...no SSN, no job, financial difficulties looming, wife deeply stressed out, and AOS interview on Monday morning. This is just a barrel of laughs at the moment. Hoho.

If I could go back, I think I'd forswear this entire illogical, frustrating, ridiculous, outdated process and come here illegally. They get a better deal than we do.

I just posted in another SSN thread about this...

My husband's name wasn't in the system for the longest time. Turned out it was because they used the handwritten thing attached to the I-94 that you fill out after being on a plane for hours and hours to put your name into the computer, rather then the printed copies of your name that are on the passport, visa, etc. that you also give them. In his case bad handwriting, mixed with an officer reading an E as an F because it was too close to the line, caused his name to be in the computer all wrong, so of course it wasn't there when he went to get a SSN. The lady that helped us was really great and found the problem after several weeks... maybe try asking if that could be why you aren't in the system?

We ended up having to go back to his POE to correct it and the lady told us she gets at least 10 of those a day! We know it was his fault and he should have been even more careful with the handwriting, but come on shouldn't they be checking the I-94 against the visa and passport to catch these kind of things and stop people from using fraudulent documents?!

Timeline:

11-15-2005: Sent in I-129F to VSC

11-21-2005: NOA1

I'm almost speechless. They couldn't have used the I-94 for mine, and it's a good thing they didn't, considering I filled it while standing jetlagged and exhausted in the line at LAX. As a result, I wrote my MIDDLE NAME instead of my first.

Anyway, anyone in a similar situation to mine that applied for an SSN in late June/early July should be cheered to hear that mine turned up on Friday.

Once again. It seems that when you have an AOS pending the majority of times the work authorized status doesn't get updated to SAVE.

Not sure if this will help when you go back to the SSA office to follow up on your application. but if they will let you look at the SAVE query see if this applies in your case. Make sure they haven't sent the G-845 because your status says PEN (Pending) even though your eligibility says you are authorized to work.

RM 00203.735 Requesting Online (Primary) Verification By SAVE

F. Procedure — Interpreting the “Eligibility Statement” Message on the SAVE Query Response

4. SAVE Eligibility Statement Line Message Is “Temporary Employment Authorized”

a. SAVE Eligibility Statement Message and Immigration Document Agree

Process the SSN card application, basing the decision on the SAVE response as well as other evidence submitted when:

-- All information on the SAVE query response matches the information on the immigration document;

-- The immigration documents indicate temporary employment authorization (e.g., I-94 with an alien classification that shows the person is authorized to work, Form I-766, or Form I-688B); AND

-- If the SAVE query response Eligibility Statement line shows the message “Temporary Employment Authorized.”

G. List of Most Common “INS Status” Line Codes

NOTE: Generally, regardless of the INS Status line code, when the alien has been issued an EAD and the A number is entered to query SAVE, the Eligibility Statement message is “Temporary Employment Authorized.”

INS Status line code

PEN

What the code means

There is a pending DHS action (the applicant has applied for an immigration benefit, but DHS has not yet adjudicated that application, e.g. the applicant applied to adjust his/her status to permanent resident alien or LAPR status)
