There have been numerous instances of societies that have used terrible punishments to deter crime. It patently does not work. A police state will reduce visible criminal activity and it has to be remember that all those countries that currently employ corrective physical punishment as one part of their corrective strategy use police in ways that no one posting here would be at all comfortable with.

Not sure if your addressing my comments but hey I say let not do this as a deterrent lets do it for pleasure, I would love to see this man hang.

It was not addressed specifically at you. Have you witnessed an execution before?

I have not and in all honesty I dont think I would want to personally see this man executed, also I am not for public hangings. I do however want him to be executed. I have however seen death before and have no stomach for it and no matter how much I want this guy to die, when it comes down to it I wouldnt want to witness that.

Really? Who should witness executions? You do know that people have to do that, and believe it or not, these witnesses do not enjoy executions and they most definitely are affected by them. What sort of stomach should an executioner have also?

I would certainly like to see the perpetrator punished, and taken out of normal society but not executed because execution is not something that should be out of site out of mind. It is done on behalf of each and every one of us, and as such we have to collectively accept responsibility for that reality that you (and I) can't stomach even if it is physically performed by others.

Violent death is something that isn't for everyone to witness in person. It makes quite an impression.

A normal person will always be affected by the site of a person being killed in cold blood. It is alien to the normal psyche.

Cold blood... tragically in an accident... and in an execution. It really puts sentient life into perspective. I recommend such a thing to the macho men out there that chickenhawk their way through life.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Well plenty of jobs in life have to be done regardless to how they might affect a person, the person thru time learns to deal with the tasks at hand. No one is forced to be a executioner as is the person who has to preform autopsies.

If it came down to it and me watching the execution was the only way he could be executed I would do it in a heart beat, given the option I would rather not.

No one can choose to be an executioner, they are assigned that duty. I presume there is a mechanism to refuse, but I expect it is quite difficult to do so. Read about the life of executioners. They are rarely advocates of capital punishmen.

Learning to 'deal' with exectution is very different from learning to deal with other tasks that are associated with the dead or dying. Most people do not want to think about it but we all should because it is done in the name of each and every one of us. I think you would make an excellent witness to an execution Simpson from your respopnse but I would much rather you did not ever have to be one and I would much rather US society aligned itself with European thinking on this. Maybe some day it will.

Just those people that macho their way through a conversation. No, I'm not placing you in that 'demographic.' Its admirable that you would not wish to be present at such an execution. I'd rather not see one again although I do think the punishment of death would fit the crime.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Holy #######, BY, Danno, Marc....... The only word I can think of to describe your posts in this thread is despicable. Not everything needs to be partisan. A woman was brutally murdered and Hal expressed his condolences. You really feel the need to turn a sincere thread about a disgusting crime into a polarizing political debacle?

My thoughts exactly. A woman was brutally assaulted & murdered and the usual suspects are trying to drum up controversy where none exists. Not a single person in this thread tried to rationalize the murderer's actions... not one.

Disgusting crime with some very ignorant responses. Oh yea I have been labeled a "lib" on VJ numerous times but I support capital punsihment & strict sentences for violent offenders.

That just means you're not a bleeding heart. But still a lib

No it means I know when to mix politics with an issue and when not to. Trying to ignite a political argument in a thread about a woman brutally killed is beyond the limits of good taste & that's what some posters tried to do here.

Oh ok I see, thanks. You witnessed a execution?, how did that come about?

That would be something good for me to look into, I really dont know much about how a executioner gets the job. I would think that if he/she was strongly opposed to it that they wouldn't be forced to do it.

Im not sure I see the significance of "in the name of each and every one of us".

A childhood friend was murdered by her BF. I was allowed to attend with some family members.
