SSN for IR1 / CR1

Hi my fellow Vjers,

This is Musashi's Wife

In preparation.. (Hoping that by December, Im gonna be with my Musashi... hihihi)

When I filled up the DS-23O, I answered YES to the question

Do you want the Social

Security Administration to

assign you a SSN and issue a

card? (You must answer YES

to question 33b. to receive a

number and a card.)

But Im confuse because some of our family member here in VJ still applied for their SSN when they reached USA.

Do we need to apply? Or they will just sent our SSN Card since we answer YES to this question?

mine I answered YES,.. maybe the VJ member you are referring used an obsolete form..

My parents ticked the box for a SSN, We waited 3 weeks after their arrival and nothing had come so we ended up going to the local SSA office and applying in person... They both had theor SSN within a week.

You don't necessarily have to wait for your SSN to be mailed even you checked yes on DS-230.

I checked yes on my form, but went to a SSA office soon after my entry to the US because I needed one right away for some paperwork.

Yes, that is the most important point. Go ahead and check it off, but don't wait weeks and weeks for it to arrive. Sometimes they send it, sometimes they don't. If it has not arrived in 2 weeks, do go down to the SS office and apply.

I already have an existing SS card based off my F1 for the last four years. Will mine still be valid or will I need to get another one, presumably with no restrictions on it?

sachinky - you'll need to UPDATE the records at SSA with the new visa type, once you are in USA. I THINK you'll keep the SSN itself, just get a new SSN card. It should have the same number.

check in , in person, with SSA office 10 days to 2 weeks after you hit dirt. (come through the POE )

if they can't find you in the system, come back another 7 days later.

The government computers don't sync up in real time - it takes a bit for the batch update, sometimes 2 cycles.
