With all the talk of guns, guessing the guns, guns at the range, guns under the bed, underwear holding guns= gunderwear, etc. etc. I thought I would start a gun thread, where we could all throw in gun pics and name that gun, pros, cons, some talk on pies, talk on guns inside pie, or pies inside guns.

So name this specific gun!

Actually not specific enough. 'The Challenge' is what makes this specific firearm unique. I mean the specific one shown in this pic.

It looks plastic to me. Kind of like a movie replica.

Nope, it is quite real.

Hint 1) National Guard Armory

Stolen from a National Guard Armory and used by John Dillinger

Getting warmer

Seems I remember something about this gun and a National Guard Amory. It was stolen from an armory and used to break Dillinger out of federal prison in Kansas City when he was being transferred to court. Perhaps by Baby Face Nelson or Machine Gun Kelly. Not sure if Dillinger used it after that, but seems I have seen photos of Dillinger with this gun...but how were we supposed to know that from the photo!!!!!!!???????

Heck, I can identify ANY gun you show me a photo of, or even a partial photo of, I can also tell you the original chambering(s), rifling twist rate(s), standard bullet weight(s) and pretty much quote you dimensions of the cartridge casing off the top of my head, years of manufacture and general purpose, but to tell you which particular gun it is and what it's history is from a photo is kinda unreasonable, dont'ya think?

But it begs another question. That is the commercial model of the BAR sold by Colt, it is not the US military issue model, so I guess the National Guard was getting better deals on guns at the local hardware store? Anyway, until the antics of such guys as Dillinger and Capone, we were all allowed to buy machine guns at the hardware store and they were fairly often used by ranchers in West Texas where I grew up for shooting coyotes and other varmints. I guess you could hose down a coyote pretty good with a Thompson, or such was the theory. I have seen many photos of ranchers in my Father's and Grandfathers time with Thompsons in scabbards on horse and trucks.

The Colt Monitor was fairly popular with police agencies.

You can still own them in FREE states with Federal Registration. Go to the Knob Creek Gun Range in Kentucky (off 31W) a few miles south of Louisville the second weekend of April and October each year and you will see, probably, the greatest collection of privately owned automatic weapons (machine guns) in action. It is a big national convention twice a year and is a BLAST. There are HUNDREDS of people there with every type of automatic weapon you can imagine and they must go through about a billion $ of ammunition in 3 days! If you ever wanted to demolish a car with a quad .50 (and who doesn't?) This is your chance!

Maybe unreasonable, but I thought it would be fun and I had little to do the other day.

Close as in time-frame and what was going on during the 1930s.

It was Clyde Barrow's.

Gun was in the Mo Highway Patrol museum for a long time. Last year one of the new firearm examiners asked to clean it up. Just a little time after that the NRA called up asking if they still had it and if it workd. They came to the patrol and everyone took turns firing it. The NRA collected the casings and bullets. If they have not already being sold as some form of 'limited edition collectables' they should shortly. Just thought it was a neat fun fact.

I still remember the first time I fired a Thompson in the back yard. Very fun.

I had also seen photos of Clyde Barrow with a Colt Monitor but the stock had been cut off short, maybe a different one, so I didn't associate it with him. He is also pictured in several photos with a Browning A5 shotgun with cut off barrel and stock. For whatever reason he favored a short stock. ?????

I was teasing about the degree of difficulty.

If you are ever in Waco, go to the Texas Rangers Museum, lots of great guns and a bunch from Bonnie and Clyde. They also have the Remington M8 that was used (along with BARs) to dismantle Bonnie & Clyde's car (and them too!)

Or you can go there several times throughout the year for an Appleseed event and learn to make hits on a man-sized target out to 500 yards using nothing more than a rack-grade rifle, surplus ball ammo, a GI websling and yourself! - For way less $$$! Check out the website - http://www.appleseedinfo.org
