traveling without a new permanent resident card

Hi VisaJourney forum,

I had a question. We are in the process of getting the 10 yr. permanent resident card for my stepson. His card expired in June 2009. When the U.S. Citizenship and Imigration Services received my check, they sent me a letter saying he could travel/work for the next year while they processed the information.

So I have tickets for me and my stepson to visit Lima, Peru in December. Is the letter from the USCIS going to be good enough to go through customs and such.
