I've been for an interview for a US visa quite few times - just about 6. I've seen people dressed casually mostly, not too many dressed for like a business interview. Me personally, was dressed always with something casual - jeans and a sweater (as most of my interviews were in the winter) and only the last time my interview was in the summer so I was dressed with a casual summer dress.

Are you going for "acceptable" or are you dressing for success? Shoes and shirt are required. Anything else is acceptable. Your best business casual is an excellent idea but more important is that you feel confident in yourself and the possitive impression you will make.

Blue collar folks don't often wear a suit and tie to a job interview, where a banker or salesperson would. Were something respectful to the purpose and the person conducting the interview, would be the guide I would follow. Consular officers conducting interviews wear business apparel.

I'm especially wondering about India and if I should turn out in full wedding regalia and the signs of being married -- the sindoor on the forehead, the mangalsutra on the neck, red shiny bangles -- or will formal pants and a well fitting shirt with my wedding ring (and engagement ring since I wear both) be enough?

I've had lots of success with a full-sized chicken costume: neutral, friendly looking, yet not offensive, and you can always say you have to go to your second job right after the interview . . .

Is it ok to wear high heels? Since the weather is going to be very cold, is it acceptable to wear winter coat throughout the whole interview or do we need to remove that once we enter the building?

Wear any shoes you want but if you take your coat off, make sure you remembered clothes under it.

Really, there are no specific standards. Make the impression you think will help your case.

I didn't wear jeans, but I did wear rubber shoes. I put on very nice pants and a jacket too because it was cold. It wasn't terribly formal. Don't overdo it. Wearing formal clothes when it's obvious you aren't used to them or that they were borrowed (lol) would only make you look ridiculous. Just make sure you look nice. Good luck!
