PRINCETON, NJ -- Republicans have moved ahead of Democrats by 48% to 44% among registered voters in the latest update on Gallup's generic congressional ballot for the 2010 House elections, after trailing by six points in July and two points last month.

I'm a Democrat. And I am generally supportive of Obama and the policies I've been seeing over the past year.

And yet I still find myself seriously contemplating voting for Republicans in 2 important races next year.

The Governor of Illinois is up for re-election, as is the junior Senator. Both positions are currently filled by Democrats.

Both are flawed and highly disappointing.

The Governor is Pat Quinn, who stepped into the role after Rod Blagojevich was disgraced. Since taking office, amidst a very serious economic situation AND a very serious government ethics situation (Blago, for crying out loud!!) Quinn and the state legislature, also controlled by Democrats, have paid lip service to serious reform. My intent is to vote against the incumbent for Governor, and for my State legislative candidate, if any credible opposition materializes. I'll be paying close attention during the primaries next spring.

The junior Senator is the now infamous Roland Burris, appointed to Obama's old seat as a last gasp effort by Blago. He is not running for re-election, but he reeks of hypocrisy and lies. I'll wait to see who emerges from both the (D ) and (R ) primaries and will vote for the candidate who seems most willing to tackle the need for electoral reform in Illinois and an end to pay-for-play.

If I'm in any way representative of Illinois Democrats, I think they have a lot of work to do to clean up their act in this state if they want to hold onto these important offices. Blago, Quinn and Burris are NOT the kind of Democrats I have any truck with and have really soiled the party.

Again, I worry it is going to come too easy to the GOP..... IMO they have not been out in the wilderness long enough to learn any real lessons.

On the bright side we do see a "Conservative" movement growing legs, this might over take the Blue Bloods.

As I have said repeatedly Independents are a very important group as they essentially won the election for Obama. However the GOP shouldn't start celebrating yet, for two reasons. First the next election is 3 years away & that is an eternity when it comes to politics (numbers can change significantly in a matter of weeks or sometimes days). Secondly who the GOP pushes as a candidiate is important... for example Palin is disliked more than almost any other candidate (including Obama) so if she gets the nod the GOP is in trouble. Right now Huckabee & Romney are also front runners and they have wider appeal than Palin, so they would fare better vs Obama.

I agree that the election is far away. But here the issue is more the 2010 congressional election which is only 1 year away and Palin doesn't really figure in to that much.

Yea you're correct, although the two are related. However given the animosity between the parties and the associated polarization I don't see electing a Republican making a difference because the Dems will do what the GOP is doing... undermine the other party.
