Obama misplayed health care debate

Freshman Sen. Mark Warner, Virginia Democrat, said Tuesday that President Obama has misplayed his attempt to reform U.S. heath care by focusing on insurance coverage instead of explaining that the current system is headed toward a financial meltdown.

"I wish the president would have started the debate by explaining to the American people that our current health care system is not financially sustainable, for even another decade," Mr. Warner said. "Driving down health care costs should have been the focus of the debate."

Mr. Warner, 54, made millions investing in technology ventures before he became Virginia's governor from 2002 to 2006 and helped cut the state's $6 billion deficit through a tax package.

On Tuesday, he told The Washington Times' "America's Morning News" radio show the key points of the debate should be that the largest contributor to the U.S deficit is federal spending on health care, Medicare will go bankrupt in the next seven years and the average American family will spend 40 percent of its disposable income on health care insurance.

He also said the cost of insurance on U.S. businesses is increasing their costs, making them less competitive in the worldwide market.

"As a former business guy, I believe America has to stay competitive in the global economy," Mr. Warner said.

The effort by the Democrat-controlled Congress to fulfill Mr. Obama's goal of reforming health care in his first year began this summer, with contentious debates on Capitol Hill, then in town-hall-style meetings across the country.

The House last week passed a reform bill, but the Senate has yet to hold a full vote. Among the major issues are cost, a potential government-run system and now abortion funding.

Mr. Warner also said Tuesday that he, along with some Republicans and fellow Democrats in Congress, think the economy will never fully recover from the recession unless the roughly $1.4 trillion federal deficit is brought under control.

He said old methods are not working and advocated for a bipartisan commission to make a new set of regulations on which Capitol Hill lawmakers could vote only "yes" or "no."

"I'm a new senator, but I don't see how we're going to get the deficit under control if we do it through the regular order in the Senate in which people can add and protect their own programs."

He said some Democrats also are saying they might not vote to extend the ceiling on the debt without a commitment to create the commission.

The nature of this administration is to villify all big business. The banking industry, auto industry, coal and oil industry. The list goes on and on. This final answer is not about saving money but control of every aspect of your life.

They are vilifying industries that have been screwing americans for years. First thing I noticed after moving here and having to pay my first bill is that my azz was sore.

Trying to control out lives is not true either. It's called reform. The status quo in the US is that companies get to control my life and I have squat to say about. For example, if I don't like comcast's rip-off pricing or poor service, what am I to do? If I don't like my employers choice of health insurance, what am I to do? If I don't agree with the clauses in the 9,000 page contracts, what am I to do? Refer to my second sentence for the answer to that.

I actually had more actual choices in socialist or socially-democratic countries, were government intervention is heavy, than I do here. I would love to see anyone explain that for me. I am all ears. In total disbelief and against logic, some here actually advocate even less government and more of the same. That is just lunacy.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

It is a pity that the medical industrial complex owns Congress. It's a pity that any corporate entity can purchase whatever legislation they need. That's how we got where we are today. Corporations don't get a vote on election day but they get to drive the legislative process regardless of how the people voted. That's the real shame and that's why America is so fcuked up in so many ways.

Just look at the advertising they are allowed to produce to sway opinion. To the support of John McCain, he at least stood up against this. However, the US Supreme court, the Achilles heel of America, has ruled it unconstitutional. A word that makes me cringe when I hear it.

To anyone foreign and educated, it's quiet evident that corporations and special interests control this country. It's why the 'coalition of (insert private industry)' is allowed to produce ridiculous commercials claiming 'carbon dioxide is good for the planet'. It's why disingenuous organizations such as the ACLU get to sue a county and push their agenda, totally disregarding the opinion of the voters / constituents.

Our federal and state governments regularly have commercials explaining their decisions. Not in America, have not even seen one. Ironically, probably not allowed to.

The more you compare and contrast the US to your homeland, the better life seems here, and the more suckass the place you came from sounds.

How so? Certainly not in the opinion of international study after study. You lose in all of those rankings, badly too might I add.

Government propaganda commercials. No freedom of speech. Overpriced goods. Whining malcontent dirt bags. Crappy beer. I am sure you will provide more things to compare and contrast.

You have not traveled much have you? Go to Europe and ask them about beer.

  • Government Propaganda. Welcome to the developed parliamentary world. You know, the system most first world countries like Aus use. Not the system that 2nd and 3rd world (aka poor) countries use.
  • Freedom of Speech you say? Dude, people abroad in developed countries laugh at this. Quite hard too might I add.
  • Overpriced goods. Sh-t you got me there, however, since the median wage is over $53.5K, it's easily affordable.

Dude, stick to your little business and leave discussions to adults that are educated, furthermore, actually have a clue in life.

Yes, because if the US is known for something, it's for its purity and protection of consumers against chemicals.

Go have a look at what is banned in Europe yet widely acceptable here, than come talk to me. Prime example rBGH and US milk.

While you are at it, check out Germany's purity law for their beer.

Edit: May want to look at Food Inc. Practices banned overseas yet widely used here.

Obama did misplay health care reform, but for a different reason. It is painfully obvious that the conservative Republicans are more concerned with facilitating Obama's failure than making any sort of reasonable compromise, because lets face it their goal is a GOP President in 2012. Likewise the liberal Democrats are too stupid to realize that their resistance to any policy that isn't liberal screws the Democrats as a whole, since Obama needs both the moderate & liberal Democrats for a majority vote.

Given these realities Obama should have reached out to the moderate Republicans & Democrats (and the few Independents) and came up with a health care policy that they could live with. Likewise he should have told the conservatives & liberals to go have sex with themselves because they are both part of the problem & not the solution.
