what should I make for NYE?

In Brasil NY dinner consists of dishes that (as part of a superstition) bring wealth, health and good tidings for the New Year. Those would be dishes that contain honey; grains such as lentils and chickpeas; dried fruits like plums, apricots, raisins that represent a long life; grapes and pomegranate for renewal and the meats are usually Pork, Turkey, Lamb and Ham.

So it's similar to Christmas for us, we make panetone, we make big arrangements of fresh and dry fruits, server Pork or Turkey with a colorful rice (with raisins or veggies in it) and eat rabanadas (sorta like a french toast covered in sugar and cinnamon).

My mom has a recipe for fruitcake that's AMAZING! And it's actually a cake, slight drier than a regular cake, but not the doughy stuff I've seen for traditional fruitcakes in US.

could I have the recipe? I will totally try it as long as it's not something that will take me a long time since I can't stand for long periods at once.

Sure, I made myself a cookbook with my favorites from mom's cookbook before I moved here.

Start with:

2 1/2 cups sugar

250g margarine

6 eggs

1 tsp ground cloves

1 tsp grated orange peel

Mix till whitish non buttery taste (you know the drill).

Then add:

3 cups (not over filled) all purpose flour

1 tbsp baking powder

3 tbsp cocoa mix (nesquick)

1 cup orange juice (we use freshly squeezed at home, not store bought)

1 cup grated edam cheese (for a lack of better similar cheese, in Brasil it's called queijo do reino, but it's similar to edam so that should work jsut fine)

Mix again till well blended

Then add:

1 chalice rum (mom uses those tall shot glasses, a chalice really, I'm guessing 1/4 of a cup?)

1 chalice Moscatel Wine (I'm thinking Madeira works too if you can't find moscatel where you live)

1 cup raisins

1 cup crystallized fruits

1 cup chopped walnuts

1 cup bread crumbs

Blend these and bake as per usual cake baking time in buttered/floured pan. 350F, around 30 min.
