Vent! Just got back from my ultrasound and due to the abortion laws in British Columbia, the technician is not allowed to tell me the gender of my baby before 20 weeks (I'm 19 weeks)! The rest of Canada (and US) has no such laws.

The techie says it's to prevent people from aborting due to the gender and 20 weeks is the latest week one can allow to abort.

Wow...I'm pro-choice, but twenty weeks seems awfully late for an abortion. I thought they would draw the line at the first trimester...

@ Reven... wow, that is really, really odd -- I had no idea that any part of Canada had any 'laws' like that. No idea whatsoever.

What do you think the reasoning is for having a law like that only in Vancouver? You are in Vancouver, right? I have an idea but I don't want to blurt it out lest I come across as freakish....

Yes, the reason is what I'm guessing you're thinking. It's because there is a large population of Indo-Canadians in the area, and there were several cases (in the '90's, as I recall) where doctors were performing many abortions on female zygotes / fetuses of Indo-Canadian women.

I've googled around and Wyatt's right about Indo-Canadians practicing gendercide. Apparently some, to circumvent the law, go down to Washington's ultrasound clinics to find out the gender and then proceed to abort if it's not their preferred gender.

I see the logic of the law but I'm still Why should all British Columbians be subject to the law meant to prevent an ethnic group from gendercide?
