I was a nervous wreck the first few times I had to merge onto the freeway :P but now that I have to do that at least four times a week because of work I have gotten used to it..

our tomtom seems to be pretty accurate when it comes to estimating the time it takes to get somewhere...

That is almost the identical distance from Calgary to Lake Mary FL! We took around 8 days (granted some days we only travelled 6 hours or so, plus we drive at the speed limit) - and not in the winter

dont tell me u drive the speed limit AND in the left hand lane!!! I could strangle those people!! lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Oof! Eight days...wow.

Chances are that I'll be driving alone...so I'm hoping I can make it in three full days. That may be too much. Four is more likely. If I can spend fourteen hours per day driving, and the conditions aren't horrible at any point, I can make it in three...but given that it'll be winter (hopefully!), with a lot of night driving and a car (and possibly trailer) full of stuff...I'll aim for four and hope for three.

And also hope I don't drive off a mountain.

I drove from Winnipeg to DC back in 2003. Left early 1 morning, stayed overnight, and into DC the next day pretty late.

I used a GPS when first moving to Vancouver. The streets are very poorly designed and it's rare for anything to make sense at all.

As for traffic... well, Vancouver is terrible for that. Highway 1 in particular. A drive that SHOULD only take 30 minutes often takes 1 hour -- and that's if you're lucky. It's not unusual to take even longer.

I've noticed that rush hour begins at 2PM and lasts until about 7PM. Any time between then you should probably bring a book. You're not going anywhere soon. :P

Rawr. There is this one person who always posts in the K-1 forum that drives me batty. They are rude to posters and think they know everything!! Everything they say is right answer, of course, since they know everything, and we should just ignore the other posts. The problem is that they don't even read the other posts when they reply. They even try to answer consulate/country specific questions they obviously have no experience with and know nothing about. This is why I stay in Canada! This is the person who insulted me when I tried to help someone because apparently Canada is different then every other country and rules apply differently to us. Not really.

My mother did Seattle -> Tampa in 3 days. It's possible, but insane. We're planning on 5 days - I've already got it fairly mapped out, too.

First day is south to mid-Oregon, CA border (maybe LV) by the second day, Texas the third, and Louisiana the fourth. Home on the fifth!

Montreal: BEAT!!! Approved!!!!!

My husband and I were just discussing this the other day. I don't mind him doing the laundry, but I find I have so many finicky items myself (like delicate sweaters that go in a bag, or something I was remembering had a grease spot from lunch on Weds) that it's just easier if I do it.

His laundry is always easier...sorts, washes and can dry virtually everything he owns. I hang most of mine to dry on a rack and then fluff in the drier when done.

I will also do it on Sat morning as early as possible to get it out of the way (ooooh let's see what time it is now...5:52am)

Being up that early on a Sat to do laundry is just wrong in soooo many ways!!!!

Very true, stay up 'til 4am and do it then. :P

Toronto to Spokane in 40hours is always fun. Toronto to Las Vegas in less than two days is also mucho fun.

I've driven from Rancho Cucamonga, California (between L.A. and Riverside) all the way to Olympia, Washington in a day. It took me fourteen hours, I think...even though GoogleMaps suggests over seventeen. I don't think I was doing the speed limit though...it was always hard to keep the speed down in my old Trans Am. :P

I probably could have made it the extra three hours home...but I started getting really aggravated once I was into Washington State. I suppose it was driver fatigue mixed with mild road rage...so I decided to just call it a night at a Motel Six.

I think I'll do the same thing when I make the trip to Washington D.C.: drive until I start feeling fatigued and edgy, then either stop for a prolonged meal and continue...or just get a room for the night. Fortunately I love driving in general, or else I doubt I'd even consider making the trip that way.

wow. This all makes me wish I could drive. I would so rent a Uhaul! But,as it is, I think it's one of the rent a Pods for me.

It's only like 500miles from where I live to where I need to go -- about a 7 hour drive.

Why am I here in the driving home thread, you ask...

I dunno... I just wanted to play with the big kids...
