Hi all we got married July 5th, (1 month after her arrival) We then went to get her SSN and they said that there was a problem in the computer, would not tell me what it was and that they wanted to file every thing with her married name at one time and not under her maiden name. This was 2 weeks ago. Now we get a letter from them stating that the department of homland security can not verify the information provided and that we need to get her work release and AOS first before we can get an SSN. But on the AOS application it has a field for SSN.

So my question is should we file for AOS without SSN? Can this even be done? She has been in the country exactly 42 days. Time is ticking away and we are way confused and lost. Please help.

Ditto what the last two posters said. You could still get it under her maiden name before the 90 days (actual like 14 days before that) and then change her last name once you get the correct docs from USCIS.

If you haven't been here over 76 days there is no reason that you can't at least apply in your maiden name. Just because you are married you are not required to apply in your married name. I would go back to the SSA office and see the office manager and have him or her show you in POMS where it says you can't apply with your maiden name after getting married, because it ain't there.

SSN not needed for AOS. Just put "NONE" where it asks for an SSN if you are assigned a number by the time you want to submit the AOS or EAD application.

I really appreciate the way MDYOUNG answers questions

based on SSN.I guess you must have worked in the SSN office somwtime.

Anyway I have a few questions on SSN:

I have recieved my SSN recently and it stated for work only.please

could you explain what that means?

Can I use this SSN to get my drivers license and can I use it to work?

Please I will appreciate your contribution.

Thanks again for everyones advice. Just for the record the letter from the SSN office says:

"We cannot give you a social security card becasue:

The Department of Homland Security is unable to verify the immigration document that you submitted as evidence of your lawful alien status. You should contact the the agency to clarify you current immigration status."

Is this just them saying that her new "married name" does not match what is on her K1?

Also if we do just apply for AOS before we get the SSN she we do so in her new married name?

Thanks again.

Reza
