What exactly is the 551 stamp! My wife arrived here in the U.S. in mid october. She still has not recieved anything (green card, ss#). The lady at the embassy said for her not to travel until she recieves the green card. Upon arrival the immigration officer said she can travel.

I hear alot about a 551 stamp in the passport to allow permission but I'm not sure exactly what that is. She has nothing that says 551! Just a regular entrance stamp which is partly on her visa but mostly on the corresponding page in her passport. Instead of a date written in they wrote in CR1. Is this what they mean by the 551 stamp to allow travel or is that something else.

Looks like I picked up a ride in Costa Rica for the next several month's and need to be leaving next week. I don't want her to have any problems when we return.

On a similar note, has anyone had someone deliver their green card to them in another country so it could be used on arrival?

If she arrived with a CR or IR visa she has to have that stamp on her passport. It's her legal evidence to prove that she has permanent residency. It has her A# and date of expiration on it. If she doesn't have it, then make an Infopass appointment with your local USCIS to get one.

The green card takes anywhere from 2-8 weeks to arrive.

This is just a stamp that shows "admitted". Then they wrote in CR1. The visa itself staes "UPON ENDORSEMENT SERVES AS TEMPORARY I-551 EVIDENCING PERMANENT RESIDENCE FOR 1 YEAR.

Where would I get an infopass to get a I-551 stamped in her visa? Why wouldn't they put it in to begin with when she entered. Especially since I asked if she can travel---in which case he said yes. Why would they just put an entrance stamp on her visa/passport pages? So confused but need to buy a plane ticket ASAP.

The stamp that has been place on her visa that says ADMITTED and CR-1 makes the visa a temporary I-551 (greencard) it is valid for 12 months from the date of entry.

That is all she needs to get back into the USA after her trip. As for getting the greencard set abroad that is not a good idea. It will be sent to the address that was confirmed at the POE. If you are not going to have access to that address then you are going to have problems getting the greencard. You may have to change your address with USCIS and that brings other problems of the greencard being sent to the wrong address and getting lost. (This happens a lot).

Thanks for the reply's.

About sending the greencard abroad, I was talking about having someone (a friend) bring it with them (pick it up from my parents) to Costa Rica when they come down to fish with us. My wording probably wasn't the greatest. We're still keeping the same address in the U.S. This Costa Rica trip is a job on a U.S. sportfisher going to Costa Rica for just several month's. Our home is still in MD.

My travel confusion is because of the contradicting instructions given by the embassy and the POE. I'm thinking the lady at the embassy was talking more of problems the airline attendent might have if my wife doesn't have an actual "green card", though her visa specifies otherwise. She was quite adament about my wife having problems and told her to wait for her green card. Maybe it was just her tone. At the POE the officer was pleasent and said she would have no problem being alowed in. That's where my confusion lies.

The visa has been endorsed, so she's free to travel. No worries.

The endorsement is the 'hand written things' on the visa page.

Have another read.

Seriously, with a CR-1 Visa IN THE PASSPORT , she can travel without the green card.

PPL usually get a stamp AFTER the card production has been ordered, when coming in on a K-1 Visa (which she doesn't have ).

She can travel, NOW.

It's up to you to TRAIN any CBP staffers to read the visa in the passport, so make some time to understand what ya got there.

CR-1 is not , repeat NOT, single entry.

Good Luck ! (or slow down, stop panicking, and read a bit? )

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
