No sick leave is pretty common in retail. In the absence of governnment mandates, it all comes down to labor supply/demand.

BINGO!

It's great to see all of those countries mandating their workers receive 50 days vacation during cancer treatment.

Stop picking on retail! The benefits are not that bad for big name retail. The salary just sucks, as do the hours.

I worked lots of retail in college. Hated every minute of it. Wish to never go back but seeing how many IT guys in their 50s end up at Home Depot who knows.

If the Democrats actually walked the talk, amazing concept, they would federally mandate a livable minimum wage, four weeks vacation leave, federal holidays and even sick leave.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Retail downunder actually pays a decent salary.

I am a recent hire and I get 5 weeks PTO plus 11 paid holidays

Nina, stop making things up. You are in Texas after all. They probably outlawed vacation time there.

Unless the laws of math don't apply downunder (does money flow the opposite way?), I am sure that is factored into the cost of products as well.

No. Instead of charging $4 for a hammer, as per the US, they will charge people $7.50 and pay their workers a livable salary. It's why retail staff smile there rather than look dead, as they do here.

So I pay $3.50 more so they can look nicer?

Not about the looks. People are paid a fair wage and in return it flows into the economy. Win / Win for all. Whereas, while only the shareholders and executives profit, people are paid jack sh-t here. After all, it's why these guys have you stooges believing it's wrong (bad bad bad) to discuss salary. They win, you lose. It's why they have repubs thinking that government anything is bad but private industry is better.
