November 11 - Remembrance Day/Veteran's Day

Tomorrow is Remembrance Day in Canada and Veterans' Day in the US. I thought it would be timely to share these two videos:

I've got my poppy on.

Lest we forget. My thoughts are always with our soldiers past and present on Remembrance Day.

This made me think of something kind of interesting (well it is to me).

My Grandfather, who I never met, served in WWII - so I decided it would be interesting to get his service records. So for anyone who is interested in getting those records - they can be obtained by writing to Library and Archives Canada - the information on how to request them and their address is here.

P.S. On a side note, does anyone know why we have both Veterans' Day and Memorial Day in America? Seems kind of repeatitve there....

As well, why did they change the poppy centres from green to black for those rememberance day poppy pins?

Memorial day is to honor those that have fallen. Vet's day is to honor all veterns - retired and serving.

Lol..though if they are both military-related, and regardless of the circumstances of the military, you would think that they would both be celebrated on the same day, or more or less around the same time....

I guess not then...

Lol...another day for a federal holiday, which is a good thing, I suppose....

Yeah..the Americans make a big deal about their military, alright!....

They are the heroes of the country and have 2 special days, indeed!

Remembrance

Today, as many congregate and mourn

The soldier's fate and those who've gone before,

I cannot help but wonder if each war

Means much at all to those who were not born

When every nation's sanctity was torn;

The veterans will soon be naught but lore,

With only books and legends to restore

The memories now faded and forlorn.

The wars we fight today are not the same:

I wanted to put this in here because I love it and because I used to sing it at a lot of school assemblies during 11/11.

I respect great poetry and this one is is pretty up there in terms of importance, significance..

I have a poppy on every jacket and sweater I own. I pricked myself too much though. Thank you to all soldiers who are serving and have served.

My son made me a poppy that I am wearing today. I thought it was adorable. He actually got his whole class involved and they made a mini project out of it, so every child made a poppy to bring home to their parents and his teacher attached a poem, not Flanders Fields, but another one.

It's surprising how many people here don't know about the poppy and it's significance. I mean there are many who do, but a lot who don't. I was talking to my co-worker and she said that they used to be really popular when she was younger and then it just kind of died out. Sad.
