i think if you give them a pizza place number they'll never know

I wouldn't recommend the pizza place, unless it's a really good pizza place! I don't know about the rest of you but my employer was and is quite strict and does check references they even call the numbers! They do keep a close eye on things and if they find any signs of dishonesty it's out the door. This is just my experience over here so far and I'm still at my first job. I should mention I don't work in the private sector so things could very well be a lot different.

When I was interviewed I was honest, I didn't have any US work experience and provided all the names, contact numbers (inc international dialing codes) so they could call if needed. I don't know if they did or not. Actually turned out to be a good job and a I hope a secure job so far I really enjoy it, it's turned out to be a challenge.

References are ####### for candidate evaluation. since you provide the references, are you providing names of people who will "badmouth" you? Certainly not, and many employers realize that. On the other hand, if your background is difficult to verify, references can provide a beginning point to leads for other references you did not provide.

Like Niels said.- if it is for a entry level or manager scale job, we will not call the references abroad. If it is for a director or above; references will be emailed at least.

It also depends much on the area. In higher education we will call your references, wherever they are.

Len, what group are you speaking for? HR in general?

I'm not a director and all my references were contacted (I work in healthcare)

I can't list my past employment nor can I list 2 other places but they are all my experience I have ... The managers at both locations are basically not in the right mind to get refs from and would likely give a very bad ref for me as when I worked there they constantly gave me problems ( not just me but other workers and the places have VERY high turn over rate. ) And my job placement for my college tried to fail my college by giving me a false 70 hours report of my activitys. While I worked they were very rude to me my supervisor barely showed up. And when I asked if i could help they would always say no just go sit at the table. -- pretty much cant list any of thos as refs.. but can I list them as being employed there and my experiences there?

My job is a Vet Assistant.

- Im likely going to have to join one of thos temp centers to get jobs before I can work as an assistant here if they check refs..

I'm the USC and my references were never contacted (as far as I know), but I suggest doing all that you can to make sure your potential employer can call/e-mail if they want to.

My husband has applied for countless jobs since he's been in the U.S. and we always used the same references and no one was ever called.

I do think it depends on the job and the industry. I would fully expect someone working in a medical field to have their referees contacted over someone applying to type letters for a non-specific company.

If by law they are not allowed to ask for more than confirmation of employment and dates, then I doubt it's worth the cost and effort of an international call.

I'm a public school teacher and my principal did not contact my prior employer (in Brazil) before hiring me - or any other reference for that matter. Then again, we have to have a background check and be finger printed, along with showing all of our credentials so I guess that's even better  .

When I got my first job here in US, where I still work until now, when asked for references, I asked if what they want is references that are in the Philippines and I gave option of references here in US, people i know that are currently in US and who I've worked with in the past who can attest to my capabilities. I gave them all my references anyway, 3 that i worked with in the previous companies and 3 references that are here in US who knows my work while i was in college. I have set expectations with my employers that i only have the contact information when i was still working with them in the Philippines, I am not sure if they have changed mobile nos or if they are still in the same company we worked for (luckily they all were still the same). I provided email, mobile nos, work nos. Our company oursources the background verification and i got email back from my references in the Philippines that they indeed called and did some verification. Work ethics and all that... I remember my previous manager said someone from India called him.. and that he didn't expect it! but it turned out ok....
